Communicating our Math Strategies Themes of the Week: Apple Obser vations/Addition Games/ Rich Problems/Reading Strategies/Question of the Day/Math Assessments ! The SUNSHINES were apple scientists throughout this week! After reading books, observing learning videos, and even taking a nature walk, the SUNSHINES communicated their understanding through art, writing, and discussions. KWL CHARTS WRITING NARRATIVES LITERACY AND TECHNOLOGY! Social Studies/Science/Health READING * The SUNSHINES used their thinking to communicate what they know, what they want to know, and what they learned about apples. ! * THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, MANY OF OUR READING LESSONS TARGETED BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN USING READING STRATEGIES INDEPENDENTLY. THEY PRACTICED USING THE PICTURES AND THE REST OF THE SENTENCE TO FIGURE OUT “COVERED/UNKNOWN” WORDS. ! * They looked closely at a variety of apples to make observations and wonders. ! * They tracked, recorded, and observed how apples changed into applesauce. ! TECHNOLOGY * The SUNSHINES created a class book on Pixie. They had to type a sentence, add an illustration, and navigate the program. KWL Chart * THEY CONTINUED TO WORK ON READING STAMINA AND PERSEVERANCE. WE CHARTED WAYS THAT WE PERSEVERED THROUGHOUT READING WORKSHOP. ! * WE PRACTICED FLUENCY AND WORD STUDY THROUGH THE POEMS OF THE WEEK. ! LETTERS OF THE WEEK: REVIEW OF THE ALPHABET WRITING SUNSHINE WORDS OF THE WEEK: BECAUSE, FAVORITE ! *THE QUESTIONS OF THE DAY FOCUSED ON OPINION AND INFORMATIONAL WRITING. THE SUNSHINES HAD TO COMMUNICATE THEIR LEARNING ABOUT HOW APPLES GROW AND CHANGE. THEY HAD TO STATE THEIR OPINION ABOUT THEIR FAVORITE APPLE AND WHY THEY LIKE IT. The Arts * After learning about the American symbols, the SUNSHINES collaborated to make an AMERICAN FLAG to demonstrate their learning. Social Development * After learning about how an apple tree grows and changes throughout the seasons, the SUNSHINES collaborated with their big buddies to create apple trees. Through discussions, strategies, and flexible thinking, the big buddies and little buddies created conversation pieces of art! *WE CONTINUED TO BUILD WRITING WORKSHOP ROUTINES. EACH DAY, THE SUNSHINES HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE THEIR FINISHED NARRATIVES IN THE “AUTHOR’S CHAIR.” *WE CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON WRITING Technology and Dictation FROM OUR HEADS AND HEARTS. ! THESE TYPE OF PROBLEMS POSE A PROBLEM AND INSTIGATE WONDERS AND QUESTIONS. AFTER TALKING ABOUT OUR WONDERS, THE SUNSHINES GET A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
