Second Grade News Thursday October 29, 2015 Oct 30. - No school Nov. 1 - Daylight Savings Time - set your clocks! Reading/Writing Workshop This week the students were excited to make a connection to the fall holiday with reading mysteries. We listened to Miss Nelson is Missing and discussed aspects of being a reading detective. We wrote our own versions of this story and were able to talk about being afraid and ways to overcome our fears. Math Students in math this week focused on place value. We began with reviewing 10 more and 10 less by playing a game on the hundreds chart. We also worked on writing 3 digit numbers in both written and expanded form. They really enjoyed the mystery number game where they were given clues and had to determine the mystery number based on different math concepts. We finished our week with the unit test over place value. We will begin double digit addition next week. Word Study This week in Word Study, a new rotation began! Students are focusing on commonly misspelled high frequency words, digraphs/blends, homophones (words that sound that same, but are spelled differently), and the spelling rule “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” (Example: fl o at—you say the “o” in float, not the “a” since the “o” comes first.) Your th child will be tested over these 12 words next Friday, November 6 . Please make sure they are studying these words nightly, as well as applying these words in the “real world” (when reading/writing). This week, a student shared that since they know how to spell make , they can spell bake, flake, raked, and making (drop e, add –ing). The students are really enjoying making connections with our words! Word Study words : make, write, first, would, very, float, star, story, right, driving, broom, cloud Social Studies In the spirit of Halloween, second graders enjoyed reading two different Scholastic News articles about “creepy” things this week in Content! One article was called “Bats in Blankets,” and the other was titled, “A Cave Under the Earth.” We read both articles aloud, and then went back to the text to prove our answers to the questions following the article. We also attended an incredibly motivating assembly with Basketball Jim Jones, who taught us all about leadership on Tuesday! Please ask your child to tell you about his/her “peak” from the assembly.
