Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Friday March 4, 2016 March 11 - COSI Field trip March 21 - 25 Spring Break Reading/Writing Workshop We have been excited to participate in the Read Across America celebration. We have had mystery readers, costume celebrations, and the Read-a-Thon. The READ-A-THON is a great way to encourage reading, support our school and celebrate Read Across America Week. Students gathered sponsors to pledge to donate money for minutes, pages, or books we read. Money is due by NEXT FRIDAY. We also concluded our Fairy Tale unit with a final assessment about the different versions and aspects of the many “Cinderellas” we studied. Students will be sharing their interpretations of Cinderella with the class as final copies are being edited. Math In math this week, the students learned about line plots. They began the week by creating a class line plot and then throughout the week created line plots according to data they collected. The unit was completed by a group line plot that also included questions to ask students about their line plots. Students were able to share their results and also allow their peers to answer questions they created about their graphs. Word Study Second graders learned about homophones this week. We learned that homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently . We practiced using different homophones in sentences correctly. For example: I am so happy you are here today! Please read loudly so everyone can hear you. Science We continued our unit on Forces and Motion this week. Students participated in different stations with a bouncy ball, spinning top, pinwheel, marble, toy car, and bubbles to explore different forms of motion. We also completed a “Ramp Roll” where students made different size ramps to observe and record how the marble rolled down them differently. We also used sandpaper and construction paper to make friction when racing toy cars. We ended the week using a Venn Diagram to sort if different objects would roll or slide. We will have a Forces and Motion test on Monday. Please help your child review his/her study guide this weekend.
