Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Thursday, January 14, 2016 Jan. 15 - No School - Teacher Professional Development day Jan. 18 - No School - MLK Day Jan. 22 - Real Eyes Presentation Jan. 28 - Mid-Year Parent Teacher Conferences Reading Workshop: Teachers have been administering mid-year DRAs to students to prepare for parent-teacher conferences. Students have been building their independent stamina and literacy skills by participating in our Daily 5 activities during Reading Workshop. Writing Workshop: We have been working diligently with our writing project. Revising and Editing were the focus activities of peer and teacher conferences. We have corrected spellings and have been able to add interesting details to make our stories complete. Students have been very excited to publish and share their “Trapped in a Snow Globe” writing projects. These projects will be displayed in our hallways during conferences. (You won’t be able to miss them because they are just too adorable.) Writing fictional narratives is a way for children to be creative and explore endless possibilities while using proper conventions of language. Math: This week in math we focused on money. We determined that coin amounts can be made in different ways using different coin combinations. The students have really enjoyed working with money and have been doing a wonderful job. At home, please try to reinforce money and have them count out their own money for small purchases. We had an assessment on Wednesday and then went right into 3D shapes. Students will focus on 3D shapes and will not have an assessment on this until Jan.22. nd Word Study: This week students were assessed on their K-2 grade high frequency words [writing/spelling]. We will use this midyear data to guide our instruction. Next week, we will wrap up our high frequency word assessments [reading] and begin exploring “Shades of Meaning”. Science: This week in Science, students went on a nature walk to identify living and nonliving things. We learned about the characteristics of all living things as well (needs air, needs water, grows). The focus of our week was on how these living things can cause change on Earth. For example, humans can cause both positive and negative changes on the Earth. We can help the earth by recycling, and we harm the Earth by littering or cutting down trees/forests to build buildings. We will continue this unit next week. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day : Students enjoyed learning about MLK with a Scholastic News titled “A Spectacular Speech.” We also enjoyed discussing our dreams, just like Martin Luther King, Jr. once shared his.
