Classified Staff Advisory Council Minutes Tuesday, September 3; 9 – 10 AM, Old Main Founders Room Present: Jay Christianson, Renee Copes, Pat Kleman, Harley Martin, Libby Raymond, Paulette Rogers, Heidi Wallner Absent: Connie Anderson, Shelly Auer, Danielle Beschta, Tammy Larson, Marshall Lee, Alvin Schuller Civil Discourse Initiative: Dona Warren and Chris Cirmo shared their initiative with us. It’s an initiative on civility, with the goal being to model what civil discourse should look like. They want to show how a discussion on different sides can be done. It’s not motivated from them noticing a lack of civility, it’s not a “Be Nice” campaign. They are looking for endorsement from the entire campus, to include CSAC, SGA, Faculty Senate, etc. After the presentation, discussion followed. Some concern was voiced that this doesn’t benefit classified staff, or have direct bearing on staff. Others felt that supporting the movement was a step in the right direction for all parts of the institution. Jay Christianson called for the vote, Heidi Wallner seconded. Vote passed unanimously for CSAC to endorse the Initiative. Committee Updates: Paulette Rogers gave the brief update on the UPS Ad Hoc Committee and UPS/Classified Staff Governance Video Conference. Discussion of CSAC creating a workflow chart to plan implementation of self-governance by July 1, 2015 (info link if available). Pat Kleman then shared a report from the Living Wage Task Force. While the studies showed UWSP was paying a living wage even at the lowest starting range, all starting wages fall below the comparable public sector market, causing retention and recruitment issues. Recommendations were made on how to correct this. Some discussion was done regarding DMC’s, helping part-time find extra work, and going further to look at the all pay ranges at UWSP compared to the public marketplace. Fall Appreciation Week: Limited time. Looked at what was done in the past, what to do this year. One idea was to do a Brown Bag session on how “Classified Grant for Professional Development”: what are they, what is available, how to write a grant, etc. Next Meeting: Tuesday, October1, 2013 in the Founders Room, 9:00am-10:00am
