Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award
The Classified Staff Advisory Council is pleased to
announce that Colleen Angel, Library, has been
selected as the recipient of the 2009 Carolyn Rolfson
Sargis Award.
Colleen started her UWSP career (while an
undergraduate student) as a half-time Library
Assistant in the Public Services area of the Library in
the Reserve Department on July 1, 1980. Almost
twenty nine years later, she is still working in the
Library, still in the Public Service side of library work,
though the job descriptions and duties have
changed many times over the years! She is currently classified as a
Library Services Assistant Advanced/Lead, working in the Reference
and Interlibrary Loan Departments. For the Reference half of her job,
she is responsible for staffing the Reference Desk for 12 to 15 hours per
week, and for providing research assistance/instruction and library
orientation to students, staff and community people, maintaining the
Reference Collection, preparing Reference books for contract binding,
and supervising student work. For the Interlibrary Loan half of her job,
she does screening of Interlibrary Loan requests for materials which can
be printed or downloaded from onsite and remote databases, helps
people make requests, and processes the requests asking for materials
from other libraries.
Colleen seems to have the uncanny ability to track down the most
obscure and difficult Interlibrary Loan request. Recently she had a
request for an actual newspaper headline from a 1930’s Chicago
Tribune from a patron who was working on props for a UWSP play.
Colleen was able to get a loan of the microfilm of the paper he needed
so he could scan and enlarge the front page of the paper.
Almost every semester since 2003, Colleen has assisted with the fifth
lecture in the Communication 101 program, which deals with research
and the use of the Library. This helps alert students to the research
help available to them in our Library. She also offers research
assistance to the Communication Graduate Assistants. She has served
as “teacher” and “judge” for the LEAD program which brings high school
students to campus to help them learn creative problem solving. The
LEAD program introduces these students to college life and gives them
skills to take back to their homes, schools and communities.
Colleen is committed to professional development and life-long
learning. Professionally she participates in and stays involved with the
Wisconsin Library Association (WLA). She has chaired the Interlibrary
Loan Round Table and the Library Research Round Table and is
currently chair of the Reference and Adult Services Section. As chair
she helps to come up with presentation ideas, arrange for conference
speakers and introduce the presenters. She is also a member of the
Professional Development Committee of the Wisconsin Association of
Academic Librarians (WAAL), where she helps to organize Professional
Development seminars for librarians, and to review applications and
letters of support to select the WAAL Scholarship recipients.
While working at UWSP, Colleen earned a BS in Psychology from
UWSP, an MLIS in Library & Information Science from UW-Milwaukee,
and an MA in Communication from UWSP. She recently became a
Licentiate Minister in the National Spiritualist Association of Churches after
finishing the required coursework from the Morris Pratt Institute located in
Milwaukee. She says, “It’s a little hard for me to stop learning!”

Classified Employee Recognition Awards
The Classified Employee Recognition
Awards recognize outstanding contributions
of time and effort to an employee’s
department or to the University community.
There are two categories for the awards University Service and Outstanding Work Performance. All
permanent, project, and limited term Classified employees
are eligible for these awards. Each recipient will receive a
$50 gift certificate and an award certificate at the Classified
Staff Spring Awards Ceremony on April 14.
The 2008 Recognition Awards Committee included Pat
Birrenkott, Registration & Records; Jackie Engum (co-chair),
Biology; Carol Grasamkee, International Programs; Kathy
Paulson, UC Administration; Mimi Johnson, Art & Design;
Diane Stelzer, Geography/Geology; Joan Schuh, (co-chair)
Health Services; and, Anne Swenson, Library. The
committee met to review the paperwork submitted for several
deserving candidates.
All recipients of the 2008 Recognition Awards will receive
the Outstanding Work Performance Award. This award
recognizes performance far beyond what is normally
expected of an employee. It includes taking on additional
responsibilities or increased workload, accepting and
completing special projects that are not part of the
employee’s normal work duties, developing or modifying
procedures or exhibiting behavior that enhances the
employee’s workplace. The result is improved effectiveness
and efficiency of service offered by the work unit or the
University.
The recipients of the 2008 Outstanding Work Performance
Awards are: Ellen Jo Holguin, Biology; Pat Kleman,
Psychology; Ann Klosinski, Centers Reservations; Bernice
Kurzynski, Interior Architecture; and, Sara Weisensel,
University Library.
Ellen Jo Holguin is the Environmental Coordinator for the
Biology Department and is responsible for regulatory standards
involving Chemical procurement, storage, use and disposal of
biohazardous laboratory and medical waste. She also runs the
Biology Stockroom, Dishwashing/Autoclave Room and the
Chemical Stockroom. In 2008, Ellen Jo had the task of
implementing new labeling standards for all chemicals used
throughout the Biology Department labs and the CNR
Chemical Stockroom. The new chemical labeling, record
keeping and enforcement that has been added to her job will
be valuable when the time for federal inspection arrives. Ellen
Jo has been described as a “little bulldog” in encouraging the
faculty & staff to complete the necessary documents for
chemical storage and use. She also had to fill in while a coworker was out on medical leave for several weeks and order
lab supplies, research materials and equipment.
Pat Kleman is the Academic Department Associate for the
Psychology Department. Pat’s duties include, but are not
limited to, monitoring the department accounts, student
hiring, timetable preparation, managing course waiting lists,
faculty retention folders and organizing the department
awards banquet. Over the past year Pat took on the task of
coordinating the purchase of desks for the entire department
and assisted each faculty member with their custom desk
design. She also served as the budget, food and reservation
coordinator for the UWSP “Enhancing the Teaching of
Psychology” conference. The faculty and staff of the
Psychology Department greatly admire her enthusiasm and
ability to get things accomplished. As one person stated,
“The department is looking forward to working with her for
many years to come!”
Ann Klosinski is the Reservations Coordinator for the
University Centers and works with individuals, groups or
departments who wish to use space in Allen Center, DeBot
Center and the Dreyfus University Center. Ann is the person
that explains and implements the policy and fee changes to
help groups understand that the way things are currently
done is not the way they used to be done (before the
building was renovated.) This past year Ann has taken on
being the full-time staff liaison for the University Centers
Advisory and Policy Board which reviews and recommends
changes and deletions to the UC priority and fee structures.
Ann has also devised a new electronic evaluation of services
for all events held in the UC that has worked in getting to
issues or concerns with customer service in a fast and
efficient manner. One nominator exclaimed, “Ann is a gem
and a gift to the campus!”
Bernice Kurzynski is the Academic Department Associate
with the Department of Interior Architecture. She provides
administrative, paraprofessional and technical support for the
department as well as for the Associate Dean by monitoring
budgets, managing the department office, coordinating
program activities and troubleshooting software and
hardware problems, to name a few of her duties. During the
past year Bernice supervised the ordering of classroom
equipment and upgrades, coordinated new space
arrangements within the Division and coordinated several
student field trips. She also assisted faculty members in
coordinating classroom activities while they were out on
medical leave. Bernice is known for her perpetual smile,
warm personality and enthusiasm even at trying moments.
Sara Weisensel is the Periodicals Supervisor in the
University Library where she supervises and trains about 15
students at the Periodicals Desk, as well as a student
horticulturalist, who provides information and care of the
plants housed in the Library. Sara also assists faculty, staff,
students and the general public with periodical questions by
locating articles and writing citations. During the past year
Sara came to the rescue of the Library’s Interlibrary Loan
department by training all of the new hires. She also
volunteered to gather journals which were needed for lending
requests. She used the gathering slips, which sometimes
contained very limited information about the borrower and
used them as a training tool for the student staff. The
Interlibrary Loan department depends upon other libraries for
material as much as they depend on us. Sara’s efforts made
material available to borrowing libraries in a timely fashion.
When Sara is presented with a situation that requires a lot of
research, she will not stop until she has an answer. As one
student worker said, “She just never gives up!”
Congratulations to all award recipients on your well-deserved recognition. Thank you for your
outstanding level of commitment and performance to the University as well as the community.
Thank you also to the supervisors and co-workers who nominated these deserving employees.
These awards are a great way to let an outstanding employee know that their work is greatly appreciated.
Please keep those deserving employees in mind for next year’s awards!

Colleen is also an active and involved member of the
Community. She has trained with and worked with the
Portage County Literacy Council. She has offered
classes in how to meditate and led free guided
meditations. She has served on the Board of the local
Heart of Wisconsin Gem and Mineral Society and
continues to participate in local Rock and Gem shows
each May. Recently she spearheaded a project to send
Christmas cards to all residents of some local nursing
homes. A small group put handwritten notes and paper
cut-out snowflakes in holiday cards and delivered them to
the residents.
Colleen says “I love the variety of people on campus,
and the people we see from our surrounding
communities, and of course, the students and faculty
most of all. I feel like we are all here, learning together,
and facilitating our students in being prepared to face this
complicated world we’ve all helped to create.”

Classified Staff Against Cancer
The Classified Staff Advisory Council is putting a team together to participate in the American
Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on April 24-25 at the UWSP Health Enhancement Center (HEC). If
you are interested in joining the team, please contact Heather Springer at ext. 2105 or
hspringe@uwsp.edu.
Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for
research and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of up to 15 people gather at
schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team
member on the track at all times. There will be a campsite decorating contest, hourly themed laps all night
(some with prizes), various competitions (scavenger hunt, Guitar Hero competition, etc.) with prizes, and free
food (donated by local businesses) throughout the night.
Each Relay team member is asked to raise a minimum of $100. Last year the CSAC Relay for Life team raised
$1,800 for the cause. Almost all team members find fundraising for the American Cancer Society to be easy,
mainly because nearly everyone has been profoundly affected in some way by cancer.
Since so many of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another, Relay for Life is a great way to
remember those we've lost, those who are currently battling cancer and those who are in remission. This is a
great opportunity to support the American Cancer Society and have some fun. So, spread the word to anyone
else on or off campus who you think would be interested.
For more information, go to www.relayforlife.org/uwstevenspoint. To donate to the CSAC Relay for Life team,
go to http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=15871&team_id=412688.
Milwaukee Brewers Bus Trip
There are still fifteen (15) tickets left for the CSAC sponsored bus trip to the
Milwaukee Brewers game on Sunday, May 3, 2009. The cost is $45, which
includes the bus ride and ticket to the game. Game time is 1:05 p.m. The bus
will leave Parking Lot E at 9:00 a.m. and will return approximately 7:00 p.m.
Contact Heather Springer at ext. 2105 or hspringe@ uwsp.edu as soon as possible to
reserve your ticket. (Payment is due at the time of reservation.)
Environmental Health & Safety
The UWSP Environmental Health & Safety Committee has several safety training sessions planned over
the next few months.
• June 17-18 -- Occupational Noise (Hearing Conservation Program)
• July -- Medical Services/First Aid (Wendy Peterson will conduct this session.)
• October 7-8 -- Fire Safety/Extinguishers
• November 4-5 -- Asbestos Awareness
• December 16-17 -- Emergency Response/Spills
All employees are welcome to attend these sessions. Watch the Message of the Day (MOD) for topics,
times, and locations. No pre-registration is necessary.
Regularly scheduled safety training information sessions are presented 4 times each, to accommodate most
schedules. The sessions last about 50 minutes. Contact Dick Bartosh at ext. 2320 or dbartosh@uwsp.edu
with any questions or suggestions. 5

Classified Staff Conference at UW Parkside The UW Parkside Classified Staff Committee is hosting an all day Classified Staff Professional Development Conference, “Positive Energy in the Workplace,” on July 31, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Classified Staff members from all over the state are invited to attend. The cost for the conference is $85.00 and will cover registration fee, continental breakfast and lunch. Registration deadline is Friday June 26. (After June 26, the registration fee will be $105.00.) The keynote speaker will be Tracy Knofla. Guest speakers include Officer Kurt Bergendahl and Randy Kratz. Tracy Knofla will present “Thriving in Chaos.” Tracy’s motto is, “If it’s not fun, I’m not doing it!” She’s adamant that training is serious business that does not have to be serious. Tracy is co‐owner and a featured presenter for High Impact Training, a nationally recognized training and development company. She travels an average of 200 days per year speaking to college, corporate, and non‐profit audiences on issues of chaos, customer service, organizational effectiveness and teambuilding. “The Active Shooter on Campus” will be presented by Officer Kurt Bergendahl. Officer Bergendahl has been a sworn Police Officer at UW‐Parkside for the past 13 years. He believes in serving his community and has dedicated his life to law enforcement and making our communities safer. Before his current position at UW Parkside, he was a Lieutenant and Chief of Police with the Town of Randall Water Patrol. His vast work experience includes working as a gas station attendant, a security guard at a hospital, as well as working in the corporate world at Jockey International. Officer Bergendahl believes these life experiences have made him a well rounded individual, and have given him the ability to work and communicate with people from different backgrounds. Randy Kratz, a Consultant/Counselor with Symmetry Balanced Workplace Services, will present “Getting Along with Difficult People and Conflict Resolution.” Mr. Kratz is both a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 25 years of experience. He is also an experienced adult educator, workgroup facilitator and conflict mediator. For more information on the conference schedule and speakers, and for the registration form, go to http://www.uwp.edu/departments/governance/classified.staff/conference/. Or just enter “classified staff” in the keyword search on the UW‐Parkside home page, www.uwp.edu.
Sustainability Initiative
On Election Day, November 4, 2008, the Eco-Municipality of Stevens Point, Sustainable Stockton and the
Commission for a Greener Tomorrow, teamed up to distribute compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and
information about local sustainability groups at several polling places in Portage and Marathon Counties. The
"CFL and Vote" project handed out CFLs & local sustainability information to over 2,900 people. Over 700 of
the people who received CFLs had never used one before. In addition, 565 people signed up to receive the Central
Wisconsin Sustainability Newsletter. If installed, these 2,900 CFLs will achieve $47 in reduced energy costs per bulb for a
total savings of $136,300; energy savings to power 100 average houses in Wisconsin for a year; and, reducing emissions
of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, by 846 tons.
Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) contain about 5 milligrams (mg) of mercury per bulb– as compared to the almost 25
mg of mercury present in a watch battery and 500 mg in a mercury thermometer. CFLs do not emit any mercury when
installed, in use, properly stored, or handled. However, because of the small amount of mercury, CFLs should be recycled
when they burn out. You can drop off CFLs for recycling at Frank's Hardware, Steve's True Value and Rental & Menard's.
UW-Extension will host Building Communities Series: Focus on Sustainability. This series about building sustainable
communities explores the social, economic and environmental aspects of our communities. Each session will connect
participants with presenters via audio and internet, and allow discussion with other participants from around the state
and country. The sessions are free and are held in Room 104 of the College of Professional Studies Building from 11:30
a.m.-12:30 p.m. The next three sessions are:
•
April 21, 2009—Local Food Networks: Food Localization as a Sustainability Strategy
•
May 19, 2009—Sustainability Indicators and Measurement
•
June 16, 2009—Community Organizing for Sustainability
If you would like to receive more information on the Sustainability Initiative or a copy of the Central Wisconsin
Sustainability Newsletter by email (with recent news and upcoming events every few months) contact Lynn Markham at
lmarkham@uwsp.edu. Past editions of the newsletter are available at www.uwsp.edu/cnr/landcenter/sustainability.html.

CSAC’s 2008-09 Annual Report
The purpose of the Classified Staff Advisory Council (CSAC) is
to promote active participation in university decision-making,
promote informed communication and a positive professional
environment for all Classified employees.
We hope that we provided you with some helpful personal
and professional development opportunities this past year to
encourage you to get involved and make a difference on
campus. We serve on your behalf – all the represented and
non-represented classified staff, limited term and project
appointment employees of UWSP!
The Classified Staff Appreciation Week was held in October
and is coming up again in April, along with the Spring Awards
Ceremony. A lot of things are offered during these weeks,
including brown bags, prizes, free cardio center workouts, and
special events.
We hosted several brown bag sessions this past year, including
a UPDC grant writing workshop given by JoAnne Evica in
September. During October CSAC week, Employee Wellness
presented Office Ergonomics and Personnel offered information
on the ETF Retirement Calculator. In November, Employee
Wellness taught us how to deal with stress, and in January we
offered a question/answer session for Classified Staff grant
application writing. Coming up during CSAC week in April,
Peter Zuge will present a brown bag on how to protect yourself
on the ‘Net.
We also set up several campus tours. In September, we
enjoyed a tour of the Schmeeckle Reserve. In January, Mike
Zsido walked us through the renovated Baldwin Hall and
explained all the sustainable features of the building, and in
April, Chris Brindley will give a tour of his vermicomposting
(worm composting) and the resource recovery site.
Thanks to the organizational efforts of Heather Springer, CoChair of CSAC, we arranged a trip to Appleton in February to
see the play ‘Wicked”. It was awesome! She also helped set up a
Classified Staff Against Cancer (CSAC) team for the Relay for
Life that is held in April, and Heather is currently working on a
Brewer game bus trip in May.
Other events included a burger and brat sale in October with
proceeds going to Empty Bowls and in December, a hat and
mitten collection for Operation Bootstrap, coordinated by Libby
Raymond. As part of CSAC week in April, the “Active Shooter”
video will be presented, Pointers Achieving Wellness will
sponsor a booth in the Concourse of the DUC and CSAC will be
sponsoring an ice cream social with half the proceeds going to
the Relay for Life and a Potato Bar with proceeds going to
Operation Bootstrap.
All brown bags, tours and events are open to all permanent,
limited term and project classified employees. We’re always
looking for fresh ideas, so please contact any member of CSAC
with suggestions for activities.
In regard to technology, due to a university-wide uniform
web page format, our website was updated and is being
maintained by Anne Swenson. Thanks to Peter Zuge and Maud
LaMarche we are using online surveys for our award
nominations and elections processes. Check out our website at

Thanks to all of you for a great year!
