Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award
The Classified Staff Advisory Council is pleased
to announce that Virginia Crandell has been
selected as the recipient of the 2010 Carolyn
Rolfson Sargis Award. Virginia is honored to be
among those who have previously received this
award and says she would not be here today
without the support of her colleagues over the
years.
Virginia has spent her entire 29-year UWSP
career working in Old Main, but has worked for
and with people all around campus. She started
as a half-time LTE typist in Typesetting Services,
became a full-time employee in 1989 as a publications editor in News
and Publications, now University Relations and Communications, and
currently works as a senior communication specialist.
As a university communications coordinator, Virginia’s main
responsibilities are to edit, proofread, write and broadcast press
releases and advisories to area, statewide and national media. She
provides administrative support to the executive director and other URC
staff members, and serves as the media liaison. She also edits and
proofreads department publications, programs for commencement and
other campus events, administers and disseminates the Message of the
Day for faculty and staff members, and helps plan and assist with major
events on and off-campus including commencement, Open House and
Board of Regents visits.
Stephen Ward, director of University Relations and Communications,
states, “the key to Virginia’s influence on our unit and everyone with
whom she comes into contact is her attitude. She is friendly all the time
and has a great sense of humor. Virginia possesses the highest work
ethic and sets a tone of professionalism in the URC Office. Her
extensive knowledge of the university and the people who work here are
irreplaceable assets.”
About 15 years ago, Virginia returned to playing the flute and piccolo.
Both she and her husband, Clarke, are active in community service
through assisting and participating in educational music activities. They
are members of the UW-Marathon County Concert Band, comprised of
students and community members alike, and perform in outreach
performances throughout Central Wisconsin that benefit students, such
as playing in the pit orchestra at DC Everest and working with the
Central Wisconsin Educational Theatre Alliance.
Virginia and Clarke have been married almost 47 years. They have lived
within walking distance of UWSP since 1973 and are proud to have
maintained their 97-year-old house as a classic American residence.
Besides being involved in the upkeep of an older home, gardening and
musical activities, they enjoy traveling—especially to national parks.
Virginia says that she and Clarke are “National Park Junkies!” They
have two sons and two grandchildren. With one son in Texas and one in
Alabama, they have many opportunities to travel. Virginia also enjoys
gourmet cooking and reading.
Virginia credits her successful UWSP career to the support and
mentorship of the directors and great team in University Relations and
Communications. She is “honored to be the recipient of this prestigious
award and enjoys being a member of the UWSP community.”

Classified Employee Recognition Awards
The Classified Employee Recognition
Awards recognize outstanding contributions
of time and effort to an employee’s
department or to the University community.
There are two categories for the awards University Service and Outstanding Work Performance. All
permanent, project, and limited term Classified employees
are eligible for these awards. Each recipient will receive a
$50 gift certificate and an award certificate at the Classified
Staff Spring Awards Ceremony on April 20.
The 2009 Recognition Awards Committee included: Ellen
Jo Holguin, Biology; Pat Kleman, Psychology; Ann Klosinski,
Centers Reservations; Bernice Kurzynski, Interior
Architecture; and, Sara Weisensel, University Library.
Nora Stanczyk
Coming to UWSP from UW Marshfield in November
1999, Nora started as a Financial Specialist and continued as
Information Systems Resources Support Technician,
presently with the Point Card Office where she was involved
in the choosing and implementing UWSP’s new card system
in 2007. More recently she served on the Food Transition
Committee that was formed when the food service made the
transition from an outside contractor to becoming self
operating. Nora enjoys flower gardening at home, and takes
pride in her 4 children and 5 - and counting – grandchildren.
Lin Vogel
The UWSP Library is very pleased to say Lin has
been working there for the past 10 years, 8 of those years
she has been the Supervisor of the Reserve Department,
and currently as the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator. She has
previously served as a CSAC member, as a judge for the
History Day regional contest held at UWSP, a panelist for the
session at the 2010 Central Wisconsin Libraries Conference
here, and volunteered at almost every Wisconsin Special
Olympics in June since 1979. Lin finds volunteering a
rewarding service through her church in the HIV/AIDS
ministry, and takes time to play WWSP 90FM Trivia each
year!
Judy Yenter
Judy is celebrating 33 years in the Military Science
Department, and is a key person for her department. She is
responsible for all the personnel manning reports to the Army
as well as administration of the unit’s personnel system.
Judy plays a crucial role for students joining ROTC, and most
notably commended in having a crucial part in establishing
plans for the new building, providing historical operations
understanding so the new building could meet both apparent
and future needs. All this and more: she takes extra care to
see to the set up and administration of the Unit’s Military Ball
– the signature social event of the year.
Debra Getzloff
Debra was first hired as a typist in 1985, she is now
a University Services Associate 2, and has been with the
Student Support Services office for 25 years - duties included
office and data management, state and federal report writing,
and grant writing. She regularly attends the spring and fall
conferences of the Association of Educational Opportunity
Program Personnel of both Wisconsin and Mid-America,
having presented and facilitated USA roundtables at several
of these conferences. She is also the Union appointee to the
First and Second Parking ‘Appeals Committees, a Union
Trustee and Executive Board member. Debra actively
volunteers at church, several school fundraisers, and Little
Britches Rodeo of Wisconsin. Debra is not able to attend
today’s ceremony because she is at a conference!
University Service Award
The University Service Award recognizes time and effort
voluntarily given to the university community. The time and
effort are considered not part of the normal work assignment
and may include being involved on a campus committee,
providing assistance to staff, students or a campus
organization, etc. The result of this involvement is increased
positive perception of the University within the community or
enhancing the ability of the University to accomplish its
mission of providing educational opportunities.
The recipient of the 2009 University Service Award is
Beverly Wenzel
Bev has enthusiastically provided clerical support
for admissions staff, and processes transfer files and
transcripts all the while putting people at ease no matter the
circumstance, she is a positive, caring considerate person to
everyone, diffusing situations and providing well thought-out
suggestions to remedy issues! She contributes greatly with
her easy-going nature to moral of the Admissions Office.
Bev is known as “MacGuyver” in Admissions
because of her ability to fix what’s been broken, enabling the
office to run smoothly every day. An active member of St.
Paul’s United Methodist Church she is serving on several
committees and is a liturgist for Sunday services. Just as
passionately, you will find Bev at as many UWSP basketball
games as she can attend, and sings the praises of UWSP to
all who will listen.
Outstanding Work Performance Award
The Outstanding Work Performance Award recognizes
performance far beyond what is normally expected of an
employee. It includes taking on additional responsibilities or
increased workload, accepting and completing special
projects that are not part of the employee’s normal work
duties, developing or modifying procedures or exhibiting
behavior that enhances the employee’s workplace. The
result is improved effectiveness and efficiency of service
offered by the work unit or the University.
The recipients of the 2009 Outstanding Work Performance
Awards are: Cheryl Kinnard, Foundation; Nora Stanczyk,
Point Card Office; Lin Vogel, University Library; Judy
Yenter, Military Science; and Debra Getzloff, Student
Support Services.
Cheryl Kinnard
LTE, as Financial Specialist she is the Receptionist
and Gift Processing Assistant for the UWSP Foundation with
various levels of financial reporting since November 2000.
She is also the donor database liaison and advisor. Cheryl
is a church youth leader and supports her daughters in their
various music and athletic activities, and she has participated
in the SIEO event to “Make Life Sweeter” with several others
in the Foundation office!
Congratulations to all award recipients on
your well-deserved recognition. Thank you
for your outstanding level of commitment
and performance to the University as well as
the community.
Thank you also to the supervisors and co-workers who
nominated these deserving employees.
These awards are a great way to let an outstanding
employee know that their work is greatly appreciated.
Please keep those deserving employees in mind for next
year’s awards!
