Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award The Classified Staff Advisory Council is pleased to announce that Anne Swenson, University Library, has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award. Anne began her UWSP career in 1983 as an LTE at the Library in cataloging. She floated around the building, working in Periodicals and Government Documents and became permanent on November 4, 1990 as a Library Services Assistant Senior in Acquisitions. Eventually, Anne was promoted to Library Services Assistant-Advanced. Currently as an LSA-Advanced in Library Acquisitions, Anne has been described as “the go-to person” at the library. She coordinates all order requests for library materials, works with academic departments and serves as the library point of contact for all shipping, receiving, processing and mail distribution. In addition, she has taken on many other jobs including updating computers, repairing books and organizing open houses, conferences, displays and library events. At UW-Stevens Point, she has volunteered on the Historic Preservation Committee since 1996 and has served in many CSAC roles including co-chair and as organizer of fundraisers for American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She has won Classified Employee Recognition Awards for service and outstanding work as well as Dollars for your Sense Award. Anne is also heavily involved in her community. Since 2005, she has helped raise more than $20,000 through the sales of Circle of Hope bracelets and coordination of community fundraisers for the benefit of cancer research and support groups. In 2012 she was the spokesperson for the annual American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days in Stevens Point. She also serves as a caregiver for the St. Michael’s Living with Cancer Support Group and volunteers with Marshfield Crafters for a Cause, making items such as pillowcases for children attending Camp Hope. Anne is also a regular blood donor, having given more than 12 gallons. She is an active member at St. Joseph’s Church and was a Girl Scout leader for eight years. “The Library, UW-Stevens Point, and the community are all better places as the result of Anne’s wonderful spirit and natural congeniality,” said her library supervisor, Associate Professor Tom Reich. Anne and her husband, Ron, have two children Jhanna, St. Louis Park, MN and Emily (husband Jim), Woodbury, MN. They are proud grandparents to Lauren Anne (10 months old). They also keep busy with their four cats: Sugar, Spice, Rufus and Sam. During the summer, their family loves floating up and down in their pontoon on the Wisconsin River. Classified Employee Recognition Awards The Classified Employee Recognition Awards recognize outstanding contributions of time and effort to an employee’s department or to the University community. There are two categories for the awards - University Service and Outstanding Work Performance. All permanent, project, and limited term Classified employees are eligible for these awards. Each recipient will receive a certificate and $100 award at the Classified Staff Spring Awards Ceremony on April 17. The 2011 Recognition Awards Committee included: Terri Chang, Bursar; Sheila Bannister-Gross, Continuing Education; Charlotte Harvath, Financial Aid; and, Denise Heimstead, University Library. University Service Award The University Service Award recognizes time and effort voluntarily given to the university community. The time and effort are considered outside of the normal work assignment and may include being involved on a campus committee, providing assistance to staff, students or a campus organization, etc. The result of this involvement is increased positive perception of the University within the community or enhancing the ability of the University to accomplish its mission of providing educational opportunities. The recipient of the 2011 University Service Award is: Janis Swinford, Academic Department Associate Janis is a wonderful ambassador for UWSP reflecting an organized and welcoming UWSP community. She provides a wide range of services to various university-wide programs associated with the History department, such as: History Day, The Visions of War Series, the Korean War symposium, the Latin American Speakers Series and the Letters and Science symposium. In addition she is the College Days for Kids and Youth in College coordinator. Outstanding Work Performance Award The Outstanding Work Performance Award recognizes performance far beyond what is normally expected of an employee. It includes taking on additional responsibilities or increased workload, accepting and completing special projects that are not part of the employee’s normal work duties, developing or modifying procedures or exhibiting behavior that enhances the employee’s workplace. The result is improved effectiveness and efficiency of service offered by the work unit or the University. The recipients of the 2011 Outstanding Work Performance Awards are: Steve Edseth, Laborer/Project Crew Steve works with Facility Services as a Laborer/Project Crew member. He has gained the respect of the rest of the day shift staff by working hard and leading the way. In his project crew role, he not only sets examples, but leads by his examples. Steve works day to day with a positive attitude of “let’s get it done” and proceeds with his “work smart and safe” attitude. Andrea Musch, Natural Resources Technician/Program Assistant Andrea works in the Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit and has been a consistent source of stability during the unit’s re-organization this past year. She also went over and beyond the wildest expectations of those in the unit by becoming a U.S. Geological Survey licensed motorboat instructor. With her dedication and passion, the CNR’s summer field experience would not have happened without Andrea stepping up and guiding the electrofishing effort for Summer Camps. Lisa Nelson, Payroll & Benefits Specialist Advanced - Confidential Lisa works in Personnel/Payroll Services. This past year, Lisa has spent an enormous amount of extra hours to make sure staff and students were paid correctly with the implementation of the new HRS System. Lisa was the front line person to handle problems with this conversion. She worked on weekends, holidays and lunch hours to meet deadlines to assure employees received their pay. Lisa would literally “go the extra mile” driving to Madison to collect emergency checks for those who did not receive the correct pay. Throughout this conversion, Lisa maintained a positive and polite attitude as she would explain problems and work to the best of her ability to correct it. Kathleen Reck, Program Specialist During the past year, Kate has taken on the unofficial title of “social media” coordinator in Residential Living. She stays current with how students use technology to communicate with them, without additional compensation or recognition. Kate just does it because she wants the department to provide the best customer service possible. Kate was also very involved in the new building, Suites@201. She rewrote the housing contract for the Suites and pushed for it to be reviewed by System Legal prior to implementation. She continues to be the person co-workers look to for input because of her ability to foresee issues the rest of the folks might overlook. One of Kate’s strong traits is her passion for excellence. Judy Yenter, University Services Program Associate Judy started her employment in the Military Science Department in 1977. After 35 years in the Student Services Center, Judy, in addition to her normal duties, completed the move of Military Science department into their new facility that was built as an addition to the Health Enhancement Center. This move was a monumental undertaking, in addition to her daily work. Judy took the lead and spent countless hours reviewing furniture choices and options, color palettes for everything from the walls to the baseboards to the patterns of the tables, chairs, desks, computer benches and artwork for the walls. Judy has a great attitude and warm personality. Congratulations to all award recipients on your well-deserved recognition. Thank you for your outstanding level of commitment and performance to the University as well as the community. Thank you also to the supervisors and co-workers who nominated these deserving employees. These awards are a great way to let an outstanding employee know that their work is greatly appreciated. Please keep those deserving employees in mind for next year’s awards.
