Statute 2.3 - The Faculties Made by the Monash University Council Version incorporating amendments as at 20 December 2013 1.1 For the purpose of facilitating teaching and learning and research within the University, faculties related to particular fields of study are to be established. 1.2 For this purpose, the vice-chancellor and president may make regulations that establish the faculties of the University. 1.3 The members of a faculty shall be - 1.4 1.3.1 the chancellor, the deputy chancellors and the vice-chancellor and president; 1.3.2 each member of the teaching staff of the faculty who holds the rank of principal tutor or above or who holds a full-time appointment as a senior tutor or tutor; 1.3.3 such classes of academic staff of offshore campuses as the vice-chancellor and president appoints as members of a faculty or faculties and of a department or a school or a centre or institute of a faculty; 1.3.4 such other persons as the vice-chancellor and president appoints as members of the faculty. For the purposes of this statute 2.3 and the regulations thereunder, a full time or part time member of the academic staff of a non-Australian campus of the University is – 1.4.1 a member of the teaching staff of the appropriate faculty, or in the case of uncertainty or dispute, of the faculty designated by the vice-chancellor and president, or by his or her nominee; and 1.4.2 appointed to the appropriate department or school, or in the case of uncertainty or dispute, the department or school designated by the dean of the faculty – provided that nothing in this section 1.4 has the effect of causing a member of the academic staff of a non-Australian campus of the University to be an employee of the University if they are not otherwise such an employee. 1.5 For the purpose of facilitating the effective operation of a faculty it may be divided into departments, schools, centres or institutes. 1.6 For this purpose, the vice-chancellor and president may, by regulation, divide a faculty into departments, schools, centres and institutes. 1.7. In each department, school, centre and institute of a faculty there shall be a head appointed by the vice-chancellor and president on the recommendation of the dean. Statute 2.3 – The Faculties 1.8 The vice-chancellor and president or the dean may require any head of a department or school to provide a written report of any matter within that head’s area of responsibility. 1.9 For the avoidance of doubt, the power to establish a faculty or to establish a department or school includes the power to disestablish it. 1.10 For the avoidance of doubt, the power to appoint a head of a department or school includes the power to remove such head.
