Common Themes established for fill rates below 90% are: staff sickness, and vacancies. Staffing reflects the individual need of the patient, and when there is a less demand for care or empty beds following risk assessment this may result in staffing being under 90% which continues to maintain safe staffing levels. Common Themes established for fill rates above 120% are: patients requiring enhanced care or special observations (1:1, 2:1, up to 5:1). The Unify data does not though routinely capture; part shifts worked by staff, Band 7 Clinical cover, and the flexible use of staff across a service pathway, such as a staff member moving to another ward for a shift/part of shift. These staffing strategies enable Ward Matrons to maintain Safe Staffing Levels for the acuity/dependency of the patients on their wards
