St. Ignatius Church, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA ST. IGNATIUS PEOPLE AND PROGRAMS FOCUS ON: THE FINANCE COUNCIL Did you know that St. Ignatius has a Finance Council? The Finance Council is a consultative body to the pastor on parish financial obligations and related matters. Our Council has seven members, in addition to Fr. Bob and Fr. Ken. This is my second year on Finance Council and my first of three years as the Chair. The Finance Council operates under policy set forth by the Archdiocese. Three standing focuses at our bi-monthly meetings are parish revenue and expenses, budget to actuals, and the Pledge Program, called the Pledge for the Greater Glory. These three focus points are closely related, especially as we end the 2011 Parish Pledge year and move into the second quarter of our fiscal year. Our conversations of late have revolved around how we can increase revenues not only in the short term, but also in the long term. We want to return to a position where Fr. Bob and the Council are comfortable that the parish can cover its expenses without dipping into “reserves”. St. Ignatius has three “reserve” accounts, which in home life you may call your “emergency fund”. Each reserve account serves a specific purpose. The “Religious Purposes” reserves account has been hit hard over the past year, to cover financial shortfalls in parish retreats and faith formation. Our spiritual upbringing compels us to tend to the community’s spiritual development, so we give financial support to those who want to participate in these programs but cannot afford them. This provides for a strong spiritual future for our younger generations and a strong spiritual foothold for our adults. At our current Offertory and Gifts income rate, dipping into reserves makes the Income and Expense statements a bit unsettling in the short-term, and more so if we project out a year. Please help to rebuild our reserves and enable St. Ignatius to continue to provide the programs, services and spiritual environment that draws you to this parish. Sign up for the Parish Pledge Program. Increase your weekly or monthly financial contribution to St. Ignatius. You will find Pledge forms at the Welcome table in the back of the church. Complete the form and put it in the offertory basket or return it to the rectory. Amy Larson PARISH BUILDING COMMITTEE Have you had experience with major building construction or renovations? Would you be willing to serve on our Parish Building Committee which meets two or three times a year? If you would like further information, please call or email Fr. Bob Ver Eecke 617-552-6110, email: frvereec@bc.edu or Richard Moynihan 617-552-6117, email: moynihar@bc.edu BOOK DISCUSSION - On January 8th in the parish center at 11:15 there will be a discussion of the book Compassion: A Reflection on the Christian Life by Donald McNeill, Douglas Morrison and Henri Nouwen. As one reviewer says "this book simply, powerfully, intelligently, and at times, overwhelmingly, shows us how to relate the service and compassion of Jesus' life, and the love, patience, and generosity of God, to our own lives and the world around us. It answers the question of our human purpose in the world, and it suggests a way of being in this world that supports and encourages others and fulfills the will of God. This book teaches us how to serve God by daily and humbly serving [others]. This book is all about love. I know I will read and reread this book for the rest of my life. It is that essential and full of truth. And it is that challenging." Please join in the discussion of this highly rated book. 2. IGNATIUS TRANSITIONS GROUP TRANSITIONS NEEDS YOU - For almost three years now, I have been helping to facilitate the work of the St. Ignatius Transitions Group. Being available to provide support and assistance to those hit by the recession has been rewarding on many levels -- personal, spiritual, and professional. So many of us have family and/or friends who have lost jobs and are struggling to find work -- from all indications, it will be some time before the situation improves. In a few months, I will be leaving to spend a semester overseas: thus I turn to you for help in this effort. Currently, the group meets weekly on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 2:30 PM in the Friary Room. Between the meetings, there can be 1-3 hours of additional responsibilities maintaining the e-mail distribution list and, occasionally, contacting a speaker and arranging for him/her to meet with the group. Other facilitators provide technical assistance such as resume writing and interview prep to the job seekers. Please consider contributing your time to this worthwhile and rewarding effort. If you are interested and/or have any questions, please contact me, Eileen Connor, at econnor@bu.edu. 4.
