We hope the experience of this, St. Ignatius Summer Read, connects us all in richer ways engaging us to explore and become a part of all the rich and diverse communities that surround us. As we come together again in the Fall, we look forward to your reflections on Julia Alvarez’s theme in these two books which we call “Inspired to Act”. For our adult community: A Wedding in Haiti tells Julia Alvarez’s story of what happens when you make an unlikely friendship, when you keep a promise, when you step outside the safety zone where you operate successfully and automatically and truly open yourself to others whose backgrounds may be very diverse from your own and through that openness create new communities. Think about how much is possible when we step outside the boundaries that separate us. For our children’s community: In Return to Sender , Julia Alvarez leads you on a journey where friendships are created by people with vastly different backgrounds. Beyond official rules and regulations that would separate them, beyond borders, beyond their own fears, are two children who come to share a love of the stars, whose families and lives are connected through them to establish a lasting, human bond no one would have thought possible in the beginning of their journey together. Think about how and why Tyler and Mari, initially separated by Tyler’s overwhelming fears, unexpectedly become friends. Both A Wedding in Haiti and Return to Sender are available on line from Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Barnes and Nobles is making several copies of each book available in its Chestnut Hill store. The children’s book will be available in English and Spanish. Also, there will be copies of A Wedding in Haiti and English and Spanish versions of Return to Sender in the Parish Library for you to take out. 1. This intensive experience of Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises includes bi-weekly group meetings, bi-weekly meetings with an individual director, a commitment to daily prayer and participating in the two parish retreats at Eastern Point in Gloucester. (October 19-21 and March 8-10) The retreat is being directed by Fr. Bob VerEecke, S.J., Martha Sullivan, Kathy Maher, Peter Folan S.J., and other Jesuits studying at the BC School of Theology and Ministry. If you are interested in finding out more about the retreat, please contact Fr. Bob at frvereec@bc.edu. HYMN SING: WEDNESDAY, JULY 11TH AT 7:30 PM Please join fellow parishioners and choir members to get the first look at our new Worship 4th Edition Hymnals. We will have a blessing of the new hymnals, and sing through some new tunes as well as old favorites with Timothy Zimmerman at the mighty Cassavant Organ and Michael Burgo leading us all in song. Bring your friends to this exciting evening in the Upper Church to sing some new songs to the Lord! LITTLE ROCK BIBLE GROUP will begin its summer version entitled “The Remnant Group” on Tuesday, July 10th in the Friary Room from 7:15 pm – 8:30 pm. We will see a video of the upcoming Sunday readings and follow it with a group discussion of questions and answers pertaining to the readings. It’s a great way to prepare for Sunday liturgy! Newcomers are welcome. Refreshments will be served. If you have any questions, please call John Dafarra at 781-899-9540. OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE A HOUSE IN NORWOOD, MA – The house is a twenty-five minute car ride from Boston College and is available July 1st. You will have exclusive use of two rooms and share a kitchen, living room and bathroom with the owner who is one of our parishioners. The cost is $900/month including utilities – negotiable. FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION FOR 2012 – 2013 Registration for the 2012-2013 academic year is begins Sunday, July 1. As usual, the earlier you register, the easier it is for our office. Our suggested – and much appreciated – donation to offset the costs of the program is $250 per family. Please make every effort to register prior to the first day of Faith Formation. Pre-School – Grade 5 Sundays, 8:45 – 9:45am We believe that, even at 3 years old, students enrolled in “Faith Formation” should expect and receive catechesis, not a nursery program (which can be valuable, as well). We want all members of our community to be welcome at liturgy. This program is classroom-based and occurs in grade-alike groupings, focusing on tenets of the Catholic faith and the liturgical calendar. First Reconciliation & First Eucharist Preparation Parishioners generally prepare for these sacraments in the second grade, though we often have older children, teens, and adults who prepare to receive them. For those in elementary school, beginning in Grade 2, preparation for these sacraments, which requires a separate registration form, occurs during two “retreats”, one for each sacrament, in addition to regular weekly classes. There will be a parent meeting in the fall to discuss additional preparation requirements. Arts-Based Program Alternating Sundays, 11:00-12:30 Our Arts-Based Program is an intergenerational program (grades 1-5; K with an older sibling attending) which continues to be a wonderful and popular choice for some students and families. When registering for this class, parents will be making a commitment to the style of the instruction of the class, which is hands-on and, as the name suggests, arts-based. This requires a commitment of regular attendance on the part of each student and a commitment of regular classroom assistance on the part of each parent as well as a commitment to attending the annual fall retreat. Due to the popularity of the class, we will be limiting enrollment to 60 children. FIRE: Family Intergenerational Religious Education FIRE is a family-centered approach to Faith Formation which we are hoping to pilot during the 2012-2013 academic year. Participants will meet in family groupings six times during the fall, six times prior to Easter, and four times following Easter. Family members of all ages participate, and sessions are held on a day and time and in a place that is convenient to all. If you have sign up for this program, we will be in touch with you with further information. Please note that if there is insufficient interest in this program, it will not run and we will ask those who registered for it to enroll in one of our alternative programs. 6th-8th Grades Alternating Sundays, 11:15 – 12:30 Our Middle School Program seeks to give students an opportunity to engage in discussion about their spirituality while also providing service and liturgical experiences that are aimed at this age group. Because a critical part of the catechesis is the “out of class” component, students will be expected to participate in service and liturgical events (which will be offered approximately once per month). JustYouth (grades 6 - 8) Monthly Friday evenings, 6:00 – 8:00pm JustYouth is a middle school book group designed for people who are seeking an alternative to our Sunday morning formation for middle school. Students are given one month to read a book in common (chosen by our staff), and then we gather for food, fellowship, and discussion of the book and related topics once per month. Confirmation Years I & II Sundays, 11:15-12:30 Our first year of preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation focuses on students building an academic understanding of our faith. Our second year of preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation focuses on students building community with each other and finding a place for themselves in our larger church. The course also encourages students to reflect on what Confirmation means to them. Students are expected to make our FALL CONFIRMATION RETREAT, and to participate in at least one service project as part of their engagement in this program. Students beginning in grade 9 are welcome to begin the preparation program for confirmation. 3. How to register: *Via Email • Starting the week prior to July 1, an attachment will go out with a copy of our registration form. You can return it via email – please be sure to sign the bottom in acknowledgement of the policies listed on the reverse side of the form. If you choose this method, please submit a check to the Parish Offices at your earliest convenience. *Via the web • Our registration form will be posted online beginning July 10. You can download the form there and return it via email or via traditional post. Again, please do sign the form to acknowledge that you are aware of the policies on the reverse side. *Via Traditional Post • Completed registration forms can be mailed to: Susan Stuart, St. Ignatius Church, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467. *Register in person • Call or email for an appointment to come to the rectory anytime Susan, Dan or I are in the office and we will help you with the paperwork. You can also pick up a registration form and mail it back to me, or you can drop off a completed registration form in my mailbox. *Donations • We are very grateful for the donations that are given to our parish for our Faith Formation program. While we operate on a largely volunteer basis, the financial cost of textbooks, supplies, retreats, and sacramental preparation materials add up. Your donations are the key to helping our program maintain its high standards. If you return your registration form in person or through the post, we welcome donations along with your registration form. If you return your form electronically, you can submit a check to the rectory in person or through the mail; either way please mark it to my attention. If you wish, your Faith Formation donation can be drawn from your Pledge for the Greater Glory account. In order for us to do this, you must notify us in writing (email is sufficient). FAITH FORMATION SUMMER SERVICE TRIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH This summer, thirty-three of our high school youth will be participating in service/immersion trips to learn more about themselves, others, and social justice. TACNA, PERÚ - July 23rd – August 5th Six of our young parishioners will be traveling with two St. Ignatius Staff members to Tacna, a city in southern Perú, to live and work with the residents of Cuidad de Dios, a neighborhood built in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. We will be working with youth and adult members of the Habitat community to improve neighborhood private and public spaces. CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY - August 13th – 18th , August 20th -25th Twenty-five students, over the course of two different weeks, will be traveling to the Romero Center, a social justice retreat house in Camden, NJ. While there, they will live simply in community with peers from other church groups, spending the days interacting with residents of Camden and the evenings reflecting on their experiences.
