Ministries supported by the Appeal have a direct impact on the administration and evangelization efforts at St. Ignatius as well as the 287 other parishes in our Archdiocese. Your generous support and participation is critical to the success of the 2014 Catholic Appeal at St.Ignatius and helps move us forward in hope as we seek to better embody the Gospel message in our lives. Please complete a pledge form available in the pews or on the table in the Gathering space. You may also pledge online at BostonCatholicAppeal.org. Thank you for your prayers and support for a successful Catholic Appeal. The Novena of Grace The Jesuits of Boston College will be conducting the Novena of Grace of St. Francis Xavier between March 4 and March 12. Young Jesuits preparing for the priesthood will conduct the Novena at St. Columbkille in Brighton, St. Mary of the Assumption in Brookline and here at St. Ignatius. The Novena will take place at all three parishes, on a rotating basis, at 7:15 each evening. All novena evenings will include a reflection offered by a Jesuit and the Rosary, benediction or Mass. Most Novena evenings will also include the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The following is the schedule of the dates and places at which the Novena will take place. Tuesday, March 4th Wednesday, March 5th Thursday, March 6th Friday, March 7th Saturday, March 8th Sunday, March 9th St. Columbkille, 321 Market St, Brighton St. Ignatius, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill (includes Mass and Distribution of Ashes) St. Mary of the Assumption – 5 Linden Place Brookline St. Columbkille St. Ignatius St. Mary of the Assumption (includes Mass) Monday, March 10th Tuesday, March 11th Wednesday, March 12th St. Columbkille St. Ignatius St. Mary of the Assumption LENTEN MOVIE NIGHT Have you ever wondered what Pope Francis’ favorite movie is? It is a perfect movie for Lent, and an opportunity to reflect on the Pope’s new apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). The movie is Babette’s Feast. The Spiritual Life Commission will present a showing of this Danish film, which earned an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and a Golden Globe among other awards. The film explores the meaning of self-gift, and a face of the Eucharist through the very human action of sharing a meal. We will begin with a bite to eat in the Friary Room immediately following the 4:00pm Vigil Mass on Saturday, March 15 from 5:15-8:30pm, and then proceed to watch the film, ending with dessert and a shared reflection and discussion. Please RSVP for a food estimate to Pepe Ruiz, SJ <pepe@jesuits.net>, or to the Parish’s front desk: (617) 552-6102. 1. Parishioners who took part in this year's mission trip will talk about their work with the people of St. Anne's, our sister parish, and share their experiences serving the poor and co-laboring as an intergenerational group. Hear what they have to say about Christian unity and Christian community as lived realities in Jamaica. Come on either Sunday (or both!) and bring a friend. As Bob Marley says, "Let's get together and feel all right!" SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT OF NATIVITY PREP The annual dinner to benefit and celebrate the work of Nativity Preparatory School, the Jesuit middle school of Boston, will take place at BC High on Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m. This year, parishioner Liz Niedermeyer will be honored with the Callahan Service Award for her tireless and generous commitment to the school. A tuition-free school for boys from low-income families in Boston, Nativity Prep is entirely privately funded. If you would like to sponsor a table, purchase individual tickets or make a donation, please contact the parish office at ignatius@bc.edu or email Anne Murphy directly at amurphy@nativityboston.org. BOOK DISCUSSION On March 23rd at 11:15, there will be a discussion in the living room of the parish office. This month’s book is Jesus of Nazareth: What He Wanted, Who He Was by Gerhard Lohfink. New Testament scholar, Daniel Harrington, S.J. described Lohfink’s book as “the best Jesus book I know.” Given the recommendation, we hope you might take the time to read “the best Jesus book" and join the discussion on March 23rd. Sinceramente, Padre Bob OUTREACH MINISTRIES MARCH IS HERE AND THAT MEANS SOCKS AND FLIP-FLOPS FOR BOSTON HEALTH CARE FOR THE HOMELESS PROGRAM! The collection boxes, for new, white socks and new shower flip-flops, are in place for the whole month; they are by the Outreach table and outside the kitchen on the lower level. CSR RICE BOWL: We, as a parish community, are participating in Catholic Relief Service’s Lenten Rice Bowl program. Rice Bowls, with the Lenten calendar tucked inside, are available this weekend, so you can begin your Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday. Other materials to accompany and and inspire you along your Lenten journey are near the Bowls. Find all the materials on the Outreach table and in the Lannon Chapel. And look for each week’s bulletin piece, highlighting the “country of the week.” SHOW YOUR ST. IGNATIUS PRIDE! Faith Formation will be selling new St. Ignatius apparel! This year’s line will include short-sleeve and long-sleeve t-shirts, zip-up hoodies, and shorts, all available in youth and adult sizes. All proceeds will go towards funding the summer service trips to Camden, NJ, and the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Orders must be done through an online form. Look for a link being sent by the parish this week with a link to the form. Orders will be taken through March 23, and orders should be in around Easter! WANT MORE INSIGHT INTO THE READINGS YOU HEAR AT MASS? Join us for Pasta & Prayer, a prayerful conversation with friends over dinner to discuss the Saturday scriptures. Feed your body, mind and soul!! The next session Out Into the World, discussing the readings for the Easter Season, will take place on Thursday, March 20th in the Dining Room at the Parish Office from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We will also continue our exploration of the impact of the call of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy for full, conscious and active participation in the liturgy on our faith lives. Prior registration is required. Call Catherine at 617-782-5812 or email to cfdesq@hotmail.com to reserve a place at the table. LITTLE ROCK SCRIPTURE STUDY This semester, we will be studying “Life Eternal.” The biblical promise of eternal life appears late in Scripture, but it blossoms into fullness with the resurrection of Jesus. The study began on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:15 pm in the Lannon Chapel. The cost is $23.00, which includes a commentary, study guide and video presentation of the study. New members are always welcome. To register, you may call the Parish Office, 617-552-6102. If you have any questions, please call John Dafarra 781-899-9540. 3. LOOKING AT LENT What a long and hard winter it has been! I am sure that all of us are longing for springtime, looking eagerly for the first crocuses to rise from the cold, winter ground.. As you well know, lent is the Church’s springtime. The word Lent comes from the “lengthening of days” in the spring solstice. Lent prepares us for the full flowering of Jesus Christ in Easter, the day of resurrection. Here at St. Ignatius there will be many opportunities to deepen your faith and recommit yourself to our shared mission which comes from our baptism into Christ Jesus. In light of our baptismal rights and responsibilities, we will use the baptismal font as a primary symbol for our Lenten/Easter encounter with Christ. The unifying theme for this season is “Oh, Well”. We hope and pray that you will find the time to pray “draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation” during this Lenten Easter Season. Ash Wednesday Liturgies: March 5th, 12:15, 5:30 , 7:15 (bilingual) Novena of Grace, Liturgy and distribution of Ashes The Sundays of Lent During this Lenten season, we are called to encounter Christ in our everyday lives. Like the woman at the well, the man born blind and Mary and Martha in the Lenten Gospels, Christ enters our lives and transforms us, calling us to share God’s love with one another. Each week, during the liturgy, you will be invited to reflect on ways you can respond to this invitation, using our Parish Mission Statement. First Sunday of Lent Acknowledging our baptismal rights and responsibilities, inspired by the rich tradition of the Church and enlivened by the Second Vatican Council, we strive with the help of the Holy Spirit to ground our lives in the sacraments and in the gospel of Jesus Christ; The Mondays of Lent (Taizé and other forms of Evening Prayer) Every Monday evening in lent beginning March 10th 7:15 in the Upper Church The Saturdays of Lent All shall be well/ Nourishing the Mind, Body, Spirit (see the bulletin for further details) Moved to Greater Love/ Praying with the Society of Jesus in the US Moved to Greater Love is a Lenten/Easter invitation to Magnanimity, Silence, Creativity, and Depth, calling participants to consider how God’s love burns away fear and opens us to respond generously and wholeheartedly to the significant changes that will take place in Jesuit ministries throughout the country. Moved to Greater Love will start Sunday, March 2 (Ash Wednesday is March 5), and end on the third Sunday of Easter, May 4. All materials and instructions for Moved to Greater Love will be found at Jesuits.org/GreaterLove. Parishioners are invited to join with Jesuits from around the country in prayer each day. There will also be opportunities to meet with other parishioners and share your thoughts and reflections three times during the season of Lent and Easter Lenten Program with Marsha Mirkin TITLE - Rebecca: Vision and Relationship - DATE - Saturday, March 22, 10:00-Noon - Dining Room Church OfficeOn March 22 we will explore the role of our Biblical foremother Rebecca as a visionary keeper of the covenant that will be passed to her son Israel (Jacob). To be a visionary, she needs to envision what God wants from her and the people in her life and act with that knowledge. How does Rebecca model for us a relationship with God? What are her strengths and frailties that allow her to be the mother of Israel, and ultimately aforemother of both Jewish and Christian traditions? How can Rebecca's journey, and thejourney of Jacob (who will become Israel) relate to your experience of Lent? 4.
