There are few paying jobs in Kariobangi, a crowded neighborhood in northeastern Nairobi. CRS organizes working groups that allow members to make a living while providing a much-needed service to the community. A history of differences between the various ethnic groups has caused violence in Kariobangi. Community policing and peace-building programs run by CRS and its local partners have decreased violence in the last decade. CRS RICE BOWL: We, as a parish community, are participating in Catholic Relief Service’s Lenten Rice Bowl program. Rice Bowls, with the Lenten calendar tucked inside, and other materials to accompany and inspire you along your Lenten journey are near the Bowls which are on the Outreach table and in the Lannon Chapel. To read each week’s story about the featured country, go to www.crsricebowl.org and click on Stories of Hope. (Rezandovoy.com) LENTEN MOVIE NIGHT Have you ever wondered what Pope Francis’ favorite movie is? It is a perfect movie for Lent, and an opportunity to reflect on the Pope’s new apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). The movie is Babette’s Feast. The Spiritual Life Commission will present a showing of this Danish film, which earned an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and a Golden Globe among other awards. The film explores the meaning of self-gift, and a face of the Eucharist through the very human action of sharing a meal. We will begin with a bite to eat in the Friary Room immediately following the 4:00pm Vigil Mass on Saturday, March 15 from 5:15-8:30pm, and then proceed to watch the film, ending with dessert and a shared reflection and discussion. Please RSVP for a food estimate to Pepe Ruiz, SJ <pepe@jesuits.net>, or to the Parish’s front desk: (617) 552-6102. SHOW YOUR ST. IGNATIUS PRIDE! Faith Formation will be selling new St. Ignatius apparel! This year’s line will include short-sleeve and long-sleeve t-shirts, zip-up hoodies, and shorts, all available in youth and adult sizes. All proceeds will go towards funding the summer service trips to Camden, NJ, and the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Orders must be done through an online form. Look for a link being sent by the parish this week with a link to the form. Orders will be taken through March 23, and orders should be in around Easter! SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT OF NATIVITY PREP The annual dinner to benefit and celebrate the work of Nativity Preparatory School, the Jesuit middle school of Boston, will take place at BC High on Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m. This year, parishioner Liz Niedermeyer will be honored with the Callahan Service Award for her tireless and generous commitment to the school. A tuition-free school for boys from low-income families in Boston, Nativity Prep is entirely privately funded. If you would like to sponsor a table, purchase individual tickets or make a donation, please contact the parish office at ignatius@bc.edu or email Anne Murphy directly at amurphy@nativityboston.org. BOOK DISCUSSION On March 23rd at 11:15, there will be a discussion in the living room of the parish office. This month’s book is Jesus of Nazareth: What He Wanted, Who He Was by Gerhard Lohfink. New Testament scholar, Daniel Harrington, S.J. described Lohfink’s book as “the best Jesus book I know.” Given the recommendation, we hope you might take the time to read “the best Jesus book" and join the discussion on March 23rd. All are welcome. 3. LOOKING AT LENT What a long and hard winter it has been! I am sure that all of us are longing for springtime, looking eagerly for the first crocuses to rise from the cold, winter ground.. As you well know, lent is the Church’s springtime. The word Lent comes from the “lengthening of days” in the spring solstice. Lent prepares us for the full flowering of Jesus Christ in Easter, the day of resurrection. Here at St. Ignatius there will be many opportunities to deepen your faith and recommit yourself to our shared mission which comes from our baptism into Christ Jesus. In light of our baptismal rights and responsibilities, we will use the baptismal font as a primary symbol for our Lenten/Easter encounter with Christ. The unifying theme for this season is “Oh, Well”. We hope and pray that you will find the time to pray “draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation” during this Lenten Easter Season. The Sundays of Lent During this Lenten season, we are called to encounter Christ in our everyday lives. Like the woman at the well, the man born blind and Mary and Martha in the Lenten Gospels, Christ enters our lives and transforms us, calling us to share God’s love with one another. Each week, during the liturgy, you will be invited to reflect on ways you can respond to this invitation, using our Parish Mission Statement. Second Sunday of Lent As a Jesuit parish community, animated by the spirit of St. Ignatius, we welcome all to share the joy of the Gospel and to come to know, love and serve God and one another. Acknowledging our baptismal rights and responsibilities, inspired by the rich tradition of the Church and enlivened by the Second Vatican Council, we strive with the help of the Holy Spirit to place the vibrant worship of God in the Eucharist at the center of our parish life. The Mondays of Lent (Taizé and other forms of Evening Prayer) Every Monday evening in Lent beginning March 10th 7:15 in the Upper Church The Saturdays of Lent All shall be well/ Nourishing the Mind, Body, Spirit Moved to Greater Love/ Praying with the Society of Jesus in the US Moved to Greater Love is a Lenten/Easter invitation to Magnanimity, Silence, Creativity, and Depth, calling participants to consider how God’s love burns away fear and opens us to respond generously and wholeheartedly to the significant changes that will take place in Jesuit ministries throughout the country. Moved to Greater Love began Sunday, March 2 (Ash Wednesday is March 5), and will end on the third Sunday of Easter, May 4th . All materials and instructions for Moved to Greater Love will be found at Jesuits.org/GreaterLove. Parishioners are invited to join with Jesuits from around the country in prayer each day. There will also be opportunities to meet with other parishioners and share your thoughts and reflections three times during the season of Lent and Easter. Lenten Program with Marsha Mirkin TITLE - Rebecca: Vision and Relationship - DATE - Saturday, March 22, 10:00-Noon - Dining Room Church Office. We will explore the role of our Biblical foremother Rebecca as a visionary keeper of the covenant that will be passed to her son Israel (Jacob). To be a visionary, she needs to envision what God wants from her and the people in her life and act with that knowledge. How does Rebecca model for us a relationship with God? What are her strengths and frailties that allow her to be the mother of Israel, and ultimately aforemother of both Jewish and Christian traditions? How can Rebecca's journey, and thejourney of Jacob (who will become Israel) relate to your experience of Lent? 4.
