•Pass state laws (all bills must pass both
the house and senate)

•Can override Governor’s veto

Judicial
•Minnesota resident - 1 year
•Judge election qualification of members
•District resident - 6 months
•Can expel members
•House can impeach members of the
executive and judicial branches

•Begins regular sessions every odd numbered
year in January and even numbered years in
February
•Study and research bills
•May meet for up to 120 legislative days during
the biennium, but not after the first Monday
following the 3rd Saturday in May.
•Make recommendations to the full House &
Senate
•Elects a member as presiding officer
Conference Committees
Speaker of the House & President of the Senate
•Resolve differences when the House & Senate
pass different versions of a bill
•Designates number, chairs, and majority
members of committees
•Designates number of committee members the
minority appoints
•Hear public testimony on bills
•Consist of 3-5 members of each body
