January 28th~NO SCHOOL, Staff Development In some of our classes we use a curriculum called Steps to Respect to help us recognize bullying, and steps to stop the behavior. Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose. Bullying may consist of hitting, teasing, taunting, spreading rumors and gossip, stealing, or excluding someone from a group. It is carried out with the intent to harm someone. Bullying is often a repeated activity. However, bullying may also occur as a one-time event. Bullying always involves a power imbalance. The person bullying has more power due to such factors as age, size, strength, support of friends, or access to resources (such as toys and other belongings), and uses this power in a deliberately hurtful way. Bullying isn’t just a “part of growing up” – it is a form of harassment that can have serious consequences. All forms of bullying are detrimental to a child’s selfconfidence, but bullying behaviors such as put-downs, teasing, name-calling and threats can escalate to violence. Bullying is harmful to both the person being bullied and the bully. If parents, children, schools and community members work together, we can find solutions to bullying and harassment. Bus Transportation home is available on Mondays and Tuesdays only. Classes are from 3:50-4:50 pm. Box Top Update Keep saving those tops – Next collection drive is the week of Feb. 14th – 18th!!!! We will be having a week long sprint to see how many we can collect. The cut off to receive payment this school year is March 1st so we are trying to see how many more we can get turned in. So far this year we have received $ 4,000.00 from the program. During the last competition a group of volunteers meet every week to trim and count all the tops. A HUGE Thank You to them all!!!! Because we pay to ship them to General Mills we try to trim them down to save on postage. When trimming just make sure the expiration date is visible. Thank you. Becky Pasch & Tammy Buckley, Box Top Co-Chairs Please pick up your children promptly at 4:50 pm. Have a wonderful and relaxing break. It’s great to be a kid at this time of the year so enjoy these moments since they grow up so fast! Volunteer Corner I would like to say thanks to all the volunteers who helped with classroom parties. Thanks also to families who donated items to the Armful of Love food drive. Please look for notices next year to help with Family Fun Night. It’s in February, but planning will start in January 2011. Have fun in the snow! Patty Grunklee RES Volunteer Coordinator RESVolunteer@gmail.com, 651-423-7215 Use of e-mail at Rosemount Elementary School: We value effective communication at our school. The use of e-mail has increased over the last few years. Most of our staff members do not have their e-mail accounts open during the school day while they are working with students. As stated in our handbook: The staff at RES have an agreement to reply to e-mails within two school days. If your need to communicate with a staff member is urgent, please call the school office (651-423-7690) and we will relay your message to the appropriate person. Rosemount Elementary School Visit our Website - http://district196.org/re RES 2011 Inventors Fair Nutrition News Flash During the week of January 3rd inventions will be on display in the library. New ideas or improvements for a wide assortment of problems will be on display. Many of these inventions and their inventors are using the RES Inventors Fair as a stepping-stone for the District Inventors Fair on January 15th. Students from grades 4 and 5 were able to participate. The school fair is a way for these students to display their ideas in a non-competitive manner, and get feedback from teachers so they can make improvements, if they choose to participate in the Districts Inventors Fair. Most importantly it is a showcase for some of our fabulous kids with great ideas, dedication, and courage. Out of 250 students from our school who could have come up with an invention only these students persevered to the end. Throughout the process some students have run into obstacles and dropped out of the fair, they did not. This is what we celebrate! We will celebrate Local Lunch Day on January 26 with Minnesota corn muffins made by Pillsbury/General Mills in Chaska, Minnesota. Mel-O Clover Honey from Cannon Falls will also be served at lunch that day. (Speaking of honey, did you know that honey is not only used as a sweetener but also for medicinal purposes--for example to soothe sore throats?) KINDERGARTEN PLUS The kernels of corn that you eat are really seeds, and corn can be yellow, white, blue or red. An ear of corn contains from 200 to 400 grains and is from six to 10 inches in length. Corn is versatile and can be processed into many other products. Cornmeal is nixtamaled. This is a process developed by the Aztec and Mayan cultures to preserve and fortify their corn. Native Americans were using ground corn for cooking long before European explorers arrived in the New World. Southern Native American culture is the “cornerstone” of Southern cuisine. From their culture came one of the main staples of the Southern diet: corn (maize) - either ground into meal or made into hominy, also called masa. 2011-12 Registration Information Kindergarten Plus is an optional, fee-based, extended day program that complements traditional (half-day, free) kindergarten. The program is a collaboration between Elementary Education, which oversees the morning kindergarten program, and Community Education, which administers the afternoon Kindergarten Plus program. Morning and afternoon sessions are taught by the same licensed kindergarten teacher, resulting in a cohesive, all-day experience for students. For your child to be eligible for the initial 2011-12 Kindergarten Plus program random drawing, your completed Kindergarten Plus application and $170 deposit is due by 4pm on Friday, January 21. Please note: Applying for the Kindergarten Plus program does not replace registration for kindergarten at Rosemount Elementary. You will also need to register your child here at RES on March 2nd or 3rd. Cornbread is a “common” bread in American cuisine. It was a staple during the American Civil War because cornmeal was cheap and very versatile. Today, cornbread is a popular soul food enjoyed by many people for its texture and scent. It can be baked, fried or steamed and is known by many names such as corn muffins, corn pones, johnnycakes and hushpuppies. The taste of cornbread can vary between northern and southern states because different types of corn meal are used with differing amounts of sugar and eggs. Another delicious cornmeal preparation is shared by Italians and people from the American south. Polenta (Italian) and grits (southern) are made from corn meal and have the consistency of mashed potatoes.
