Des Moines Register 07-10-07 ISU college to add Ph.D. in business, technology By LISA ROSSI REGISTER AMES BUREAU Ames, Ia. - Iowa State University's College of Business is about to start its first Ph.D. program in business and technology, partly in response to a projected nationwide shortage of faculty to teach business courses. College officials hope to have their first class of students for the new program by fall 2009. The program will prepare people for academic careers in research, teaching and public service. The program will respond to a demand identified by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the accreditation agency for colleges of business. The association projected a shortage of almost 1,800 qualified faculty to teach business courses by 2008. Faculty in the program will teach students how to align business strategy, use technology to improve strategic management decisions and conduct scholarly research, ISU officials said. Students must complete 74 credits in course work, including 12 credits for a dissertation, and at least one of the three areas of specialization - customer relationship management, supply chain management or management of information technology. The estimated $1.1 million per year additional cost for the program will be covered by new university money, department and college reallocations, and external money. The money will add three faculty positions, graduate tuition support and graduate assistantships, and it will support research, ISU officials said.
