WHO-TV, IA 04-17-07 ISU Reacts to Virginia Tech Shootings April 17, 2007--Virginia Tech is about the same size as Iowa State University in town a little smaller than Ames. Both are typically quiet and peaceful campuses, which is why the news had such a huge impact on students at ISU. For one ISU professor, the news was especially difficult to hear. He earned his PhD at Virginia Tech. His sister and brother-in-law still work there. "My first news of it was that they were OK, which is better than seeing it on the news and wondering. But I still have friends that I hope are OK and imagine are," says Dr. Jared Danielson. As for students, they were disturbed that something so tragic could happen on a campus much like their own. "I don't think anybody is worried about anything like that happening here, but then again, they probably weren't either," says Blake Myers, a freshman. Campus security and Ames police say they are as prepared as they can be for a situation like the tragedy in Virginia, but they say, it is impossible to predict.
