Chronicle of Higher Education 12-04-06 Competition: Energy Department Picks Iowa State U. to Run Ames Lab The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a new $150-million, five-year contract to Iowa State University to manage and operate the Ames Laboratory, a national laboratory located on the Iowa State campus. According to a news release issued today by the department, the contract commits the university to take a series of steps to meet the agency’s goals. But even though the department put out the contract for competitive bidding, it ended up with little choice, as Iowa State, which has run the lab for its entire 59-year history, was the sole bidder.
