100 East 8th Street, Suite 270 Holland, MI 49423 (616) 395-7919 Number 316 Monthly Bulletin December 2014 Website: www.hope.edu/hasp Email: hasp@hope.edu Office Staff: Kim Mendels, Executive Director; Amy Berarducci, Administrative Assistant MONTHLY PROGRAM Date: Time: Place: Program: Monthly Program Chair: Peter Deede, hpdeede@aol.com Tuesday, December 2, 2014 9:00 AM refreshments, 9:30 AM program Haworth Inn & Conference Center The Salvation Army – International and Local; Major Paul Duskin It’s the holiday season, an important time for The Holland Salvation Army. Volunteers are busy ringing bells, sorting toys and packing Christmas food boxes. During the upcoming holidays, the well-known bell-ringers help complete the American portrait of Christmas. As a matter of fact, more than 25,000 volunteers will take up kettles over the holiday period in the U.S. alone. The Salvation Army provides many other community programs as well in Ottawa and Allegan counties. The Salvation Army locally, nationally and internationally has been highly recognized for addressing and providing to the needs of people. In 1994, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, an industry publication, released the results of the largest study of charitable and non-profit organization popularity and credibility conducted by Nye Lavalle & Associates. The study showed that The Salvation Army was ranked as the 4th “most popular charity/non-profit in America.” Major Paul Duskin will present the history, mission and operation of The Salvation Army with insights into the specific services provided out of the Holland offices, located at 104 Clover. Of course, what better way to “begin the season,” than a sing-along with Major Duskin leading HASP members in carols, accompanied by members of the Salvation Army band. Major Paul Duskin graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Accounting. He attended The Salvation Army College for Officer Training. His work experience includes thirteen years as an industrial accountant and twenty-five years as minister and administrator with The Salvation Army. Appointments have been in Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, South Dakota, Illinois and Michigan, with the last two years in Holland. Do you reminisce and tell stories? No doubt you share many stories over the holidays, so how about turning your talk into words on paper - that's what writing is all about? That’s what writing is all about and we write best what we know. The HASP Review team is waiting to see what you have to say. Begin brainstorming ideas today! SERVICE Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun@aol.com A Call to Engineers Recycling is a primary source of income for the Holland Rescue Mission. The primary product is clothing which is not good enough for sale through the thrift stores but can be sold to third world countries by the pound. Recycle clothing is baled into 1,000 pound bales for shipment. Currently, the restoration Center has four baling machines used to bale clothing and cardboard. It is believed that this highly manual operation has the potential for significant improvement through method changes and possibly additional equipment. What is needed is an engineering analysis of the current operations. This should be followed by: • Investigation into current practices by other facilities performing similar tasks. • Investigation into equipment available from vendors • Brainstorming about how to approach improvements • Cost/benefit analysis of possible improvements Please contact David Tapley at davidtapley@earthlink.net or 355-2538 SPECIAL EVENTS Special Events Chair: Jackie DeGroot, jackiedeg49@gmail.com REGISTRATION FORMS FOR EVENTS ARE ON THE LAST PAGE! December – Holiday Concert at Fountain Street Church featuring GVSU Monday, December 8, 2014; 6:30 PM -9:30 PM, Cost $5.00 *******************Trip is full, but call if you want to be on the Wait List************************ Join your HASP friends to celebrate the holidays with the incomparable Robert Shaw's "The Many Moods of Christmas" an extravagant choral and symphonic Christmas tapestry in music presented by the Grand Valley University Fall Arts Celebration 2014. The Many Moods of Christmas was created in 1963 for a special RCA Victor recording. Combining the ageless music of 18 of our most traditional carols with well-loved holiday melodies from composers such as Handel, Bizet, and Bach, this talented duo constructed an oratorio-like iconic masterpiece that strings together tune after tune like pearls in a necklace, filling the listener with the magic and excitement of the holidays. We will depart from the Ray & Susan Smith Stadium on 13th St. and Fairbanks Ave. at 6:30 PM. Our return should be 9:30 PM. Special Event Proposal - Lexington, Kentucky In response to the interest (or possible interest) indicated by many of you in the recent survey, two duplicate orientation meetings have been scheduled to follow up with more information and a clearer understanding of intent to proceed with the Kentucky trip proposed by the Special Events Committee. Unless we can commit to 35 - 40 participants, the trip cannot materialize at the projected cost of around $600 per person. You will be 3 introduced to a tentative schedule and asked for a response to some possible options that most appeal to the group. The orientation meetings will determine the feasibility of making final detailed arrangements. If you are interested in the trip but unable to attend either meeting, please contact Peg VanGrouw or the HASP office, 395.7919. Final payment will be due in February if the trip is warranted. Dates and places for the two orientation sessions: Tuesday, January 6 following the monthly meeting at Haworth, 10:45 am – HASP Classroom Monday, January 12, 10:00 am in the HASP classroom We look forward to meeting with you.
