Even more sobering, these numbers are expected to mushroom as baby boomers advance from middle to old age. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, half of all Americans over age 50 are expected to have low bone density or osteoporosis by 2020. For the individual, the consequences of an osteoporosis-related fracture can be devastating. Many older adults never regain the good health and quality of life they enjoyed before suffering a broken bone. Physical complications ranging from ongoing pain and stooped posture to breathing and digestive problems are common. Hip fractures can significantly impair a person’s mobility, making it impossible to drive, cook, or even walk across a room without assistance. Dr. DePree will review this condition and look at prevention and treatment options. Holland Hospital has been the recipient of many awards. Dr. DePree will review some of those awards and what Holland Hospital has done to differentiate themselves from other hospitals across the country. President Anderson reminded members that the 2014 issue of the HASP Review was available at the tables in the atrium, one per household. He thanked the Communications Committee for their work on another memorable issue as well as all those who contributed their writings and artwork. President Anderson then read the names of all past HASP presidents and charter members present and asked them to stand and be acknowledged. President Anderson then invited HASP member Joyce Magee forward to deliver our invocation. 4 Lunch was served. 2014 Business Meeting Minutes President Anderson called the meeting to order. Minutes of the June 4, 2013 meeting were printed in the August 2013 bulletin and a copy was made available on each table. There was a motion to accept the June 2013 minutes, it was supported and the motion was carried. The Treasurer’s financial report, along with a written annual report, was provided in the June 2014 monthly bulletin and one copy was provided on each table. President Anderson asked if there were any questions regarding the financial reports and there were none. The report will be filed for audit. President Anderson reported that the audit will be conducted later this summer after the close of our fiscal year. Executive Director Kim Mendels came forward to deliver her report. She reported that we had a record crowd/attendance at this annual meeting. She also asked all members who have been involved in curriculum as a committee member, presenter or coordinator to stand and thanked them for their time and efforts in what is the heart of HASP. Kim Mendels provided an overview of our financial picture and encouraged members to continue to make gifts to our Endowment Fund which generously supports our annual operating budget with a 4.5% draw toward our rent/lease agreement, and/or to make a gift to one of our two scholarships that support Hope students. Additionally, she provided a PowerPoint summary of the May survey results addressing the possibility of additional on-line tools, summer course scheduling, and classroom space and preferences this is available on our website: www.hope.edu/hasp). She also briefly summarized some of the research she and Amy had done into other Michigan and Illinois based life-long learning organizations and how this information is being used in discussions with the focus committee to see how we compare and ways we can continually improve. There were no questions other than the request to make the survey results available on our website. President Anderson explained that the six standing committees Annual Reports were also included in the June 2014 monthly bulletin for review. He asked if there were any questions to come before the committee chairs and there were none. President Anderson asked the membership to join him in a time of silence as we remembered the HASP members who have died this last year. President Anderson reminded the membership of the qualifications for this award and described our recipient as a “quiet giant, humble and honest and who has provided HASP with years of leadership in various roles as a curriculum chair, board member, President and a lifelong teacher”. Recipient Marshall Elzinga then humbly thanked the membership for the nomination and award. President Anderson delivered his parting remarks (summary): “It has been a pleasure to serve as your President this past year. I can report that HASP continues to be in excellent shape – continued growth in membership, grown in class registrations, has met its budget and continued its tradition of operating in the black. It is expertly managed by Kim Mendels and assistant Amy Berarducci. We have assembled a roster of outstanding committee chairs and members and these committees are producing excellent monthly programs, a solid curriculum, opportunities for service, and offering experiences for short trips to sample Midwestern culture. You might assume we have no problems but we do need to look further ahead. Our growth is producing several problems: space for monthly meetings, classroom space, increased number of courses which increases the demand on part time administrators, today for this meeting we have squeezed in about half of our membership – where else do we go? A big concern with our growth is that we are becoming too big to KNOW each other – smaller courses and contributing to the HASP Review your life stories/memoirs are one way we can help combat this. Additionally, our annual budget continues to have a very narrow gap between income and expenses and we need to watch this carefully and continue to support our Endowment and Scholarship funds. From its inception HASP has had a dual purpose: 1) To enrich the intellectual, cultural, and social lives of its members and 2) To make available a wealth of wide-ranging knowledge, talent, and experience to Hope College and the greater community area. We have assembled an impressive amount of brain power and residual energy in our members. I leave you with the challenge to find new ways to make available our assembled wealth of wide ranging knowledge, talent, and experience to Hope College and the greater community area.” President Anderson thanked the full membership for their support in this last year and expressed his appreciation for this opportunity to serve the Academy. He thanked members for coming and the meeting was adjourned.
