Haworth Conference Center, Hope College
“Remarks on Hope College and My Experiences and Thoughts on Professional
Ethics”, Dr. John C. Knapp, President, Hope College
Previously, Dr. Knapp was the founding director of Samford University's Frances Marlin Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership. He
served concurrently as University Professor and Mann Family Professor of Ethics and Leadership at Samford University from 200813. At Samford he promoted student development through academic and co-curricular programming, and supported teaching and
scholarship in the schools of the arts, arts and sciences, business, divinity, education, law, nursing and pharmacy. He also served as a
valued resource to the professional community.
Before joining Samford, Dr. Knapp was Professor and Director of the Center for Ethics and Corporate Responsibility at Georgia State
University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, which enrolls approximately 9,000 students. The center was established under his
leadership in 1993 (as The Southern Institute for Business and Professional Ethics) and grew to become a leading educational resource
for leaders seeking to strengthen ethics and integrity in organizations. The programs he led during this period were attended by more
than 20,000 executives and managers from hundreds of corporations, governmental agencies, non-profits and professional firms.
Dr. Knapp earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree, in theology and religious studies, in 1999 at the University of Wales, United
Kingdom, where he was an Honorary Visiting Lecturer. He completed the Master of Arts, with distinction, in theological studies in
1995 at Columbia Theological Seminary. He completed the Bachelor of Science in urban life with a concentration in communication
in 1981 at Georgia State University, where he was elected president of the student body. He and his wife, Kelly, have five children:
Amanda (24), Tracy (22), Charlie (20), Mary (17) and Ronnie (14).
His books include For the Common Good: The Ethics of Leadership in the 21st Century (Praeger, 2007); Leaders on Ethics: RealWorld Perspectives on Today’s Business Challenges (Praeger, 2007); and The Business of Higher Education (ABC-CLIO, 2009),
three volumes examining how universities cope with pressures to strengthen accountability and efficiency. His newest book is How
the Church Fails Businesspeople (and What Can Be Done about It) (Eerdmans, 2011), a practical study of the relationship of faith and
work.
We hope you will join us as we welcome Hope’s new president to HASP. He will open with some brief remarks on Hope College and
then speak about his experiences and thoughts on professional ethics.

SERVICE
Score – a new project adopted by the Service Committee
SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow, and achieve
their goals through education and mentorship. The organization is supported by the Small Business
Administration (SBA) and provides services at no cost through a national network of more than 12,000
volunteers with experience covering all business disciplines. Holland Chapter SCORE volunteers have helped
more than 800 local area entrepreneurs evaluate and achieve their business dreams and objectives over the last
seven years. The Service Committee is reaching out to HASP members that might have interest in sharing their
business experience and expertise with aspiring local entrepreneurs. If you would be interested to consider
becoming a SCORE mentor, please contact Don Cowie (616-786-2465 or djcowie@sbcglobal.net) for more
information or visit the SCORE web site at www.score.org.

responsible for planning and implementing lessons designed to meet the needs of the adult students who attend.
Volunteers assist small groups of students with the activities and engage them in conversation. The classes are
free, and free childcare is provided on site.

Brother Heinrich’s Christmas, and end with the magnificent and uplifting Gloria by John Rutter. We will leave
from the Ray Smith Stadium at13th and Fairbanks at 7:00 p.m. and return by 10:00 p.m.
The concert will be at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids.

In our renewal notices this year we had an opportunity for each member to check a box indicating if you
would like to receive the bulletin via email. This is the first month for that to take effect. It is our hope
that we got them all correct, sometimes we were unsure whether one spouse wanted email and one hard
copy, so if you are not receiving it the way you would like to, please notify Amy in the office, 395.7919
or berarducci@hope.edu.
The HASP office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday Wednesday, November 27- Friday,
November 29, 2013.
New signage for the Hope parking lots is being installed. HASP members are able to park in lots
labeled ‘F’ for Faculty/Staff.
Parking Tags: We are not sending new parking passes this year as the ones you received last year were
not dated. Please use them again this year or come to the office if you need a new one.
