Excerpts from a recently produced CD by the Hope College Chapel Choir will be used to illustrate the breadth and richness of this artistic tradition. The program will conclude with a Christmas Holiday sing-along. Brad Richmond has been Director of Choral Activities at Hope College since 1998. We will only be publishing errors or changes to the calendar. Course Cancellation: * Course: Twelve Years a Slave: We are cancelling this course because unfortunately the presenter and HASP member, John Buttrey, took a fall and will be recuperating for the next several months. This class was scheduled to be held on Thursdays, December 3 and 10 at 9:30am. These classes will be cancelled, but it is our hope to reschedule them for the summer of 2016. We will keep you posted on the situation. For now we will credit your account $5 and you may use it the next time you register. We will have a new sign up when the class is rescheduled. Artwork in the classroom: Carol Rickey will be the featured artist on display in the HASP classroom for the month of December. Note from Curriculum Chair: It doesn’t seem like people use the phrase “from soups to nuts” anymore, at least, not as often as they did back in the 40’s and 50’s when I was growing up. Of course the phrase originated as a reference to eating a meal from beginning to end – beginning with soup and ending with nuts (probably with a glass of wine). However, the phrase can also mean all inclusive, sweeping, exhaustive, and plenty. When I hear this phrase, I am reminded of places such as Woolworths, Grants, and the variety stores that had a place on every Main Street in the USA. Stores where you could browse to your heart’s content. Wandering from one counter to another, you could notice something new and unfamiliar, wonder how it worked or how it was used. After several trips of walking up and down the aisles and calculating just what you could purchase for 25 cents, you made a decision and proudly left the store with your prized package. Now, what has this got to do with HASP curriculum? Practically everything! Our term course catalogs contain a wide variety of subjects for you to explore. You can choose to attend a class that exposes you to a subject or one that helps you delve into a subject more deeply. You can also choose a lecture style class or one that requires your active participation. Our Social Studies curriculum, in its own right, reminds me of a variety store. This is a subject area that covers topics “from soup to nuts.” Social Studies offer courses in history, current events, politics, international and local issues; business and economics; education and environmental concerns; cultural and ethnic practices; to mention only a few. Please join me in thanking the members of our Social Studies Committee who contribute so much to our curriculum: Lyne Burkey, John Buttrey, Connie Corriveau, Mary Reid-Selth, Gary Scholten, Dianna Strebel, Lee Strebel, Debra Williamson, Dave Zwart, and Chairperson Bill Parr. Soon, your Winter/Spring 2016 Term catalog of courses will arrive at your home. Please spend some time browsing the variety of courses being offered. Perhaps you will see something new that piques your interest, something you never had time to explore before retirement. Or, perhaps you will want the opportunity to study a subject in depth. Whatever you choose, please enjoy the “variety store” of courses that are available to you this coming winter and spring! Communications Chair: Lorelle Eberly, jakelorelle@sbcglobal.net COMMUNICATIONS The holidays are here. The HASP Review invites you to share your memories of Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s events. What are some of your traditions associated with various celebrations? What homemade gifts have you made or received? Do you have any new ways of enjoying family gatherings? Are there 3 any disasters that would be good for a laugh? Sharing experiences is so much a part of HASP. Please submit your writing, poetry, prose, and/or art to the HASP office or email hasp@hope.edu. We look forward to your contributions. SERVICE Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun09@gmail.com Service opportunities are also listed on the HASP website www.hope.edu/hasp under “Service Opportunities” Please see the article towards the end of the bulletin for “Opportunities for Volunteering in Hope Classes”. There are many wonderful opportunities for us to serve Hope students and faculty! Please contact Elliot Tanis, tanis@hope.edu, with questions. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP THE NEXT GENERATION LEARN TO READ! WHAT: One on one reading sessions with elementary school students. A child takes home a book each school night and is required to read the book or a portion of the book with someone in his home who signs a sheet indicating the book was read. The child then reads the book to a volunteer the next day and chooses a new book to bring home. Books are available at the appropriate reading level for each child. The book and sign off sheet go home in a zip lock bag hence the name, “Baggie Books”. The program involves children from grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Melinda Mendels, a West Ottawa Schools employee with the title of Academic Coach, oversees the program. WHERE: Pinecreek Elementary Schools, West Ottawa Public Schools, 1184 136th Ave, Holland, 49424 WHEN: 1 and 1/2 hours per week, morning or afternoon, substitutes available. The program “Baggie Books” has been in place for three years. It has had a positive impact on students including improving test scores, developing passionate and responsible learners, and connecting families with the school on a daily basis. We, Vic and Isla VerMeulen, have been “Baggie Book” volunteers for three years and have found it to be extremely rewarding. The progress that the children make from the beginning of the year to the end of the year is amazing. We feel if we can help children in our community become proficient readers when they leave third grade, we have done something important. An added benefit is interacting with delightful children and observing a school system that is working very hard to serve their children. If interested, please contact HASP member: Vic and Isla VerMeulen E-mail: vvermeulen@sbcglobal.net Phone: 616-928-3366 CULTUREWORKS INSTITUTE OF CREATIVE ARTS REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS CultureWorks is a Holland, MI-based, faith inspired nonprofit dedicated to making culturally relevant, transformational art and design experiences accessible to youth from all backgrounds. If you are interested in volunteering, return the form to the HASP office or e-mail tanis@hope.edu. Elliot Tanis Professor Jonathan Hagood (History) is the Director of the Senior Seminar Program, the portion of the academic program in which students explicitly confront questions of value and belief and have the opportunity to reflect on how Christianity can inform a philosophy for living. In Spring 2016, Senior Seminar is piloting a mentoring program through which select students will be paired with a HASP volunteer. As a mentor, you will meet with your assigned student at least once before the end of March and once in April, most likely in a coffee shop like JP’s or the Kletz. In your first meeting, the student will ask you to reflect on your life and career after college and how your “life view or philosophy of living, developed and changed. In the second meeting, your job will be to ask the student to talk about her or his life view (students in Senior Seminar write a “life view paper”) and how the student plans to put it into action. Students, particularly as seniors, will greatly benefit from the wisdom and perspective as well as the thoughtful questions that members of HASP will bring. He would like up to 50 HASP volunteers! Thus far, there have been 10 HASP volunteers. I would like to volunteer for the mentoring program with Hope College seniors.
