Experiences in Kitchen Table Diplomacy, Friendship Force, International Cultural Exchange
Lyn & Dave Hargreave
Citizen diplomacy in general can be defined as any attempt to further the goal of global understanding and
peace via personal actions. Kitchen table diplomacy, as one important type of citizen diplomacy, focuses on
developing understanding and friendships across cultural barriers via staying in the homes of those elsewhere in
the world. This approach was summed up elegantly by First Lady Rosalynn Carter who observed that, “the best
way to get to know people is to put your feet under their table.”
Lyn and Dave Hargreave have been putting their feet under the table of families in many parts of the world for
the past twenty two years, and have welcomed folks from other countries into their home and table for nearly as
long. They will share some of their experiences with three organizations all dedicated to changing the world for
the better one handshake at a time
David Hargreave retired from Western Michigan University at the end of 2002 after 33 years on the faculty.
While there he taught in both the College of General Studies and the Environmental Studies Program, where he
served as Program Director for several years. While in the US Navy he taught nuclear and reactor physics for
four years at the Naval Nuclear Power School. He has degrees from Clarkson University, The Johns Hopkins
University and the University of Wisconsin. Since retirement, he and his wife Lyn have traveled extensively.
He presently serves as president of the Friendship Force of Western Michigan.
Lyn Hargreave, a graduate of Mount Carmel College of Nursing, is a retired hospital administrator. She
enjoyed a career as a TWA flight attendant for several years before marrying. Since retirement she has served
in leadership capacities with several organizations. She is currently the Great Lakes Regional Field
Representative for Friendship Force International.

Artwork in the classroom: Melanie Turturici will be the featured artist on display in the HASP classroom for
the month of September, featuring oil paintings.
Note from Curriculum Chair:
It seems as though children are not the only ones who look forward to returning to classes in the fall! Your
response to our fall term curriculum has been reassuring to all of us involved with planning courses for HASP.
Registration forms have been keeping both Kim and Amy very busy with approximately 300 registrations being
processed in a two week period. We hope you enjoy your course selections for this term.
Some of our most “popular” and “favorite” classes have returned for the fall term after a summer break. Three
of these courses overseen by our Humanities Sub-committee are The Laura Ver Plank Film Series, Books and
Writers, and Non-Fiction Books. In addition to these regular courses, the Humanities committee offers a
variety of other classes on subjects including literature, religion, and language arts. These are areas of
enrichment for those willing to contemplate their own humanity and that of the world we live in. Chaired by
Sue Bohlander, the members of the Humanities Sub-committee are: Sharon Arendshorst, David Brower, Mike
Economos, Barbara Kish, Navyne Kline, Sara Leeland, Jane Lindemuth, Diana Nelson, Dennis Van Haitsma,
and Robert Walker. Many thanks to this productive committee!

The Fine Arts Committee presents a special offering for HASP members!
Nate Allen: Playwriting and “The Sparrow”, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1:00 p.m. in the HASP classroom
Nate Allen will be on Hope's campus to direct a November production of a play he wrote, titled "The Sparrow".
Nate is the Artistic Director of the House Theatre in Chicago, which he co-founded in 2001, and he has written
several plays. Nate will speak to HASP members about "The Sparrow" and discuss his unique approach to
playwriting and production.
This is a free HASP event. Please RSVP to the HASP office, hasp@hope.edu or 395.7919 if you would like
to attend so we know how many to plan for.

Service Opportunity at Escape Ministries
Volunteers are still needed at Escape Ministries. As mentioned earlier this year their mission is to inspire, equip
and empower at-risk teens and young adults through faith to be tomorrow’s positive leaders. To have successful
outcomes, our youth can be influenced by our volunteer’s knowledge, wisdom and acts of kindness by donating
time, talent and experience. Virtually any type of support can help make a difference. They are especially in
need of tutors and mentors for both middle and high school age students. Other examples include:
• Assisting with community service projects and summer youth work programs.
• Serving on the Fund Development and Grant Writing Committee.
• Assisting with food pantry distribution as well as specialty needs (technology, social media, marketing,
etc.).
• Helping with youth athletic programs.
• Serving on the Escape Ministry Board of Directors.

Interacting With Hope Students Testimonial
Every year the opportunity to interact with Hope students has been a most pleasant experience. Talking about
what is important as a senior citizen in terms of health, faith, companionship, family, volunteering, and social
connections is always done in rotating small groups of Hope students. What an opportunity to share our lives! It
is always a bright spot for me to let students share their career goals with me as well. Thank you to the
psychology professors for asking HASP members to be involved with students every year.

A Request from Zeeland Community Hospital
Zeeland Community Hospital is looking for a volunteer to serve on an advisory council of past patients and/or
family members who’ve had experience with Spectrum Health. Council members would meet with leadership
over lunch hour monthly to strategically examine patent satisfaction scores/results and make changes for

November~ King Tut Exhibit at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, Thursday, November 12, 2015, 9:15 AM2:30 PM, Cost $25 pp
From the Rosetta Stone, decoded in 1822 to more than 1000 of his treasures found in 1922, the minor boy
pharaoh, Tutankhamun, comes alive in the exhibit at the VanAndel (public) Museum in Grand Rapids.
Remarkable replicas, meticulously crafted from the originals in Cairo, by Egyptian craftsmen, display breathtaking likenesses of 3000 year old figures, jewel-encrusted thrones, gilded shrines, alabaster canopic jars, the
iconic death mask and much more – just as they were discovered in a rare non-vandalized tomb in Egypt’s
Valley of the Kings. They recreate the scenes as first seen by Howard Carter in their rather haphazard array
then again individually in all their individual splendor. Well narrated audio guides accompany your visit, as do
films and other significant display techniques.

You will be able to move or linger at your own pace. You will be on your own for lunch in the Museum Café, a
complimentary ride on the carrousel, or viewing of other exhibits in the Museum collections. Whether or not
you can plan to attend with HASP, do enjoy the compelling informative website by googling, “The Discovery
of King Tut” in Grand Rapids, selected to be among the first cities to receive the exhibit.

Stille Nacht: A Celebration of Christmas Music from Europe
You are invited to join us as we ring in the Christmas Holiday with some of the most striking and exquisite
music of the season presented and performed by Grand Valley State University faculty, students and soloists.
This festive evening will open with a performance of J.S. Bach's "Magnificat", featuring the superb voices of
the Grand Valley University Arts Chorale with orchestra. The second half of our holiday celebration will
feature the iconic sounds of the GVSU Varsity Men's Chorus as the Christmas spirit springs forth in Fountain
Street Church through the timeless melodies of Europe's most beloved Christmas music.
We will depart from the Ray & Sue Smith Stadium on 13th and Fairbanks Ave at 6:30 PM, with return at
approximately 9:30 PM.
HASP Office/Executive Director News
Coat Mix Up: Someone accidentally took home the wrong coat from the April Monthly Program at Haworth.
They were hanging on the rack to the left of the reception desk. The coat that was left was a J. Gallery brand,
the one that was mistakenly taken is a Jones New York. They are very similar in length and color (light
gray/taupe). Please call the office and/or bring the coat in for exchange. Thanks!
Invitation
The Holland-Hope College Sustainability Institute invites HASP members to attend their Annual Event:
“Energize You!” This is a fun-filled evening with information about making your home more comfortable and
efficient. There will be a hands-on-ask-the-expert expo, student videos and awards, an update on the Holland
Energy Park, Holland’s standing competing for the Georgetown University Energy Prize, refreshments and
more! This event will be held Thursday, October 8, 2015, at the Midtown Center, 96 W 15th Street, Holland,
MI 49423. From 6:00 – 7:00 PM, the Expo will be held with Community Partners and Hands-On Activities,
from 7:00 – 8:00 there will be a Program and from 8:00 – 8:30 PM an opportunity to see student videos and
meet the film crews.
Many HASP members have attended HASP courses on sustainability issues such as energy, water quality, and
plant based nutrition led by Science, Medicine & Technology Curriculum subcommittee members. Please join
us at this important community event.

Additional Volunteers Needed for Hope Classes
Several requests have been filled, but there are still opportunities to volunteer for some Hope Classes and
interact with Hope students. Contact Elliot Tanis at tanis@hope.edu or return the form to the HASP office.
1. Education Department request was filled with 6 volunteers.
2. Professor James DeBoer (Music) can use additional help with Holland Public School musicians.
3. The Big Read Holland Area 2015 is still looking for veterans who would be willing to meet with classes
in area high schools and talk about their experiences.
4. Professor Yolanda Vega can use additional HASP volunteers to help grade posters of First Year Seminar
(FYS) students on the theme of Culture, Control, and Community. The time commitment will be from 3:155:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4.
5. There has been one volunteer for an Introduction to Engineering course.
6. Professors Carrie Bredow, Dan Zomerlei, and Tom Ludwig (Psychology) would like HASP volunteers for
their Developmental Psychology classes. Volunteers meet with 3 or 4 groups of 5 or 6 students and share
their insights as they reflect on their adult years. Carrie Bredow’s classes meet on Wednesday,
December 9, 9:30-10:20 and 11:00-11:50. Dan Zomerlei’s classes meet on Tuesday, December 8, 12:001:20 and 1:30-2:50. Professor Tom Ludwig’s class meets Friday, December 4, 1:00-1:50. Five to 10
additional volunteers could be used.
7. Professor Carrie Bredow’s request for couples who have been married more than 40 years for her seminar
on the psychology of romantic relationships was over subscribed!

8. George and Rowene Beals are teaching a FYS focusing on poverty and how to respond to it. One of the
assignments for the students will be to interview someone with experience working with people in
poverty. They are seeking people who have worked with the materially poor. This could be either
through employment or as a volunteer. Some of the areas could be non-profits, low-income schools,
government agencies, mission work, etc. They could also interview people who grew up poor. Their goal
is to provide their students with a list of people who would be willing to be interviewed one-on-one by a
student in their class. The student would be responsible for contacting the person and setting up a time and
place to meet. They have 20 freshmen in the class and their interests are varied. They can't guarantee every
person would be interviewed but, if you are chosen to be interviewed, it would be by only one student. They
don't expect it would take more than an hour.
