COMMUNICATIONS
Communications Chair: Lorelle Eberly, jakelorelle@sbcglobal.net
The ol’ calendar on the wall told us to get that IN box for HASP Review off the top shelf, dust it off and open
the lid. Our pencils are sharpened and we are perched around the table in the HASP Conference room awaiting
your submissions for the 2015 HASP Review. PLEASE give us something to look at instead of each other as
we sit here and wait. Essays, poetry, prose, memoir, rantings are all good – we are not yet desperate enough to
request old shopping lists. We are now OPEN FOR BUSINESS!! Remember HASP Review is our anthology
of members’ writings and artwork.

This program “Baggie Books” has been in place for two years. It has had a positive impact on students
including improved test scores.
Boys and Girls Club is looking for Volunteers
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holland serves over 3000 children from 1st through 12th grade and offers a
safe place where student members can partake in life changing experiences. They are looking for dependable
volunteers who are passionate about working with a diverse group of students. Starting September 8th many of
the students will need help with homework in their “Power Hour” program. The hour starts at 3:30 and runs
until 5:30 PM Monday through Friday. As a volunteer you are not required to be there the full two hours.
Reading and Math are the two biggest challenges for the students. A typical “Power Hour” consists of 3
volunteers and 15/25 students. Please contact Larry Lynn at oldrun@aol.com or 399-0799 if you are interested
in participating for one day a week or more.
Hope College’s Upward Bound Program needs Volunteers
Hope College hopes to enlist volunteers from HASP as mentors for their Upward Bound program. Students
from Holland, West Ottawa, and Fennville High Schools bring their homework to Graves Hall Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 3:30 until 6:30. They currently have 85 students on the roster with an average attendance of
close to 60 attendees. Math and Science appear to be the biggest challenge for the students. Those who
volunteer are not necessarily expected to be in attendance both days or the full three hours on any particular
day. Volunteers would fill out an application listing their academic areas of strength and availability. If you are
interested please contact Larry Lynn at 399-0799 or oldrun@aol.com.
Please see the article towards the end of the bulletin for “Opportunities for Volunteering in Hope Classes”.
There are many wonderful opportunities for us to serve Hope students and faculty! Please contact Elliot Tanis,
tanis@hope.edu, with questions.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Special Events Chair: Jackie DeGroot, jackiedeg49@gmail.com
REGISTRATION FORMS FOR EVENTS ARE ON THE LAST PAGE!
November – Detroit Institute of Arts and Detroit Historical Museum, Thursday, November 6, 2014
7:45 AM – 7:45 PM, Cost: $40
We will leave Ray and Sue Smith Stadium at 7:45 on November 6 with a stop near Lansing for refreshments
(AKA restroom stop). We will arrive at the Detroit Historical Museum at 11:00 for a self-guided tour that
chronicles the history of the Detroit area from cobblestone streets, 19th century stores, and auto assembly line
and fur trading in the 18th century—among many other exhibits.
4
We will then go across the street to the Detroit Institute of Arts where we will be able to eat lunch (at your own
expense) at either the Café ’DIA or the Kresge Court. At 1:30 pm we will have a docent-led tour and then
explore the museum until 3:45 pm. We will stop at Culvers in Lansing on the way home where snacks or meals
will also be at your own expense. Estimated time of arrival in Holland is 7:45 pm. Cost for the trip will be
$40.00 pp and does NOT include meals. Lunch items at the DIA range in price from $3.50-$11.00. Culver’s
menu includes items from ice cream novelties to full meals. Since this trip will include two museums, there
will be a lot of walking required.
The DIA was founded in 1895, has more than 100 galleries, and is considered among the top 6 art museums in
the USA. The DIA is proud to claim one of the largest and most significant and diverse art collections in the
nation. In addition to outstanding American, European, Modern, Contemporary and Graphic art, the museum
holds significant works of African, Asian, Native American, Oceanic, Islamic and Ancient Art.
Additional information-- Special Exhibit: Ordinary People by Extraordinary Artists: Works on Paper by
Degas, Renior and Friends. Many of the DIA’s strongest holdings are highlighted, including pastels, etchings
and lithographs. This exhibit is included with our admission fee.
Any questions, contact Jackie DeGroot at jackiedeg49@gmail.com, trip coordinator.
Possible Spring/April 2015 Kentucky Trip
The committee is considering a multi-day trip to Kentucky with tentative dates of April 13-17, 2015, and would
like to measure membership interest. This coincides with the opening of horse racing and foaling of the young.
Tentatively, we would spend days 1 and 4 in transit between Holland and Lexington; day 2 focused on
Lexington, day 3 at Berea College and Pleasant Hill (Shaker country). Proposed highlights could include:
visiting Keeneland Race Course and/or Kentucky Horse Park, the home of Mary Todd Lincoln, lunch at the
famous Boone Tavern Hotel, life in the Shaker village, etc. The all-inclusive cost for this trip would probably
be approximately $600+ per person with a shared hotel room. Please email the HASP office (hasp@hope.edu)
or call 395.7919 to have your name(s) added to the “interested” list by October 20th!
HASP Office News

Opportunities for Volunteering in Hope Classes, Fall 2014
Thank you to the 75 HASP members who have volunteered for 13 of 15 requests. There are still some
opportunities for volunteering for Hope Classes this fall. If you can help, either return the form to the HASP
office or e-mail tanis@hope.edu or call me at 396-2228. Elliot Tanis

4. Professor Yolanda Vega is team teaching a FYS on the theme of Culture, Control, and Community for
students in the Phelps Scholars program. Phelps Scholars will once again be giving their research poster
presentations in the Maas Auditorium. The date is Friday, November 21 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. In the past,
HASP volunteers have provided support by interacting with the students and grading the poster presentations.
We would welcome and greatly appreciate the support of 8-10 volunteers. The time commitment will be from
3:15-5:30 p.m. as it is helpful to meet with the graders prior to the presentations. She would like to have the
HASP volunteers come 30 minutes early, get a brief training on their grading rubric, and then help grade
4-5 posters each. We currently have only one volunteer so need 9 more.
5. Dr. Ryan White (Director of FYS) is teaching a FYS this term. One of his assignments is to have his
students interview someone who is older than they are about that person's life journey and sense of finding
his or her sense of calling/vocation. The assignment is simply interviewing someone with reflective insights
about their own life and the ability to articulate their own story. He could use 20 HASP volunteers. We
currently have 14 volunteers so need 6 more.
6. Professor Andrew Le (Music) is teaching a FYS class centered around beginning photography. Are you a
photography buff who would be willing to talk to his class? The class meets Monday and Wednesday, 1:00-1:50
in Nykerk 101. Could use you in October or November. We currently have one volunteer.
7. Professor James DeBoer (Music) could use more HASP members to work 1 on 1 with vocal or
instrumental students at Holland Public Schools with specific 5th grade to 12th grade student musicians during
or after the school day.
8. Professors Carrie Bredow, Sonja Trent-Brown, and John Jobson (Psychology) need a few more HASP
volunteers for their Developmental Psychology classes to share your insights as you reflect on your adult
years and respond to questions from the students. Carrie Bredow’s classes meet on Wednesday, December 3,
9:30-10:20 and 11:00-11:50. Sonja Trent-Brown’s classes meet on Thursday, December 4, 12:00-1:20 and 1:302:50. Professor John Jobson’s class meets Thursday, December 4, 8:00-9:20. They would like 6 HASP
volunteers for each of these sections, a total of 30 volunteers. We could use 10 more volunteers.
I am willing to volunteer in the following (indicate the # or Professor and time/date preference where
appropriate).
