Export Internship Program International Programs Office & Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) Agenda • • • • • • • Program Overview Course Internships Selection Criteria Timeline Expectations Q&A Program Overview • Comprehensive program designed to help UGs learn about exporting in a real-world setting where they can have considerable impact on Ohio’s small & medium-sized food product companies • Created via a partnership between the Ohio Department of Development, CIBER & OCM Spring Quarter Class (BA 657) • Academics – Fridays, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm – 2-4 site visits (Fridays, may be all day) – Taught by Prof. Steve Hills – Maximum 10 students in class • Class Highlights – you will learn – Analysis of the best global markets – Identification of good export partners – International pricing, logistics, & distribution Internships Internships: – Summer (8 weeks, June - August) – Export focused – Paid (rate of compensation determined by company) – May be on-site at the company or done remotely – ODOD will facilitate client relationship & monitor company satisfaction Types of companies • Could be any sector or industry – Focus on food and agricultural companies – Will be small to medium size (5-500 employees) • Company rationale – New to exporting or want to increase exports – Want access to ODOD/Fisher resources – Subsidy available to hire interns who are Ohio residents Types of projects • • • • Perform market research Identify best export market(s) Conduct a SWOT analysis Create a report on programs/services available to assist the company to export • Develop a market entry strategy • Research availability of buyers, relevant trade missions, trade shows & webinars • Describe labeling & ingredient requirements Student Selection Criteria • • • • • • Junior/Senior status required GPA Experience abroad Previous work experience Resume & letter of reference (faculty) Faculty interview Flexibility & enthusiasm required!! Timeline Date Event Jan – May 1 Participating companies identified & confirmed Jan 20 Student info session Jan 23 Student application open on IPO website Jan 25 – Feb 10 Faculty conduct interviews Feb 1-28 Students notified of acceptance into course March 1-30 Project scopes and position descriptions completed Timeline Date Event March 26 – June 1 Spring Quarter Class April 23 – May 1 Intern nominees presented to companies May 1 – 15 Companies conduct interviews May 18 Deadline for companies to accept/reject nominations May 21 Students informed of company matches June 11 – Aug 10 Full time internships (40 hours/week) Applications & Interviews • Go to http://fisher.osu.edu/international to apply for the class • You will be contacted by Alyssa Singer(.120) to schedule an interview with Prof. Hills & Mr. Sword • You will be notified of your acceptance into the class by Feb 28 (possibly sooner) • Keep Alyssa informed if you accept a summer internship elsewhere Expectations • You are required to attend EVERY class meeting and all site visits • You may be required to be on site every day at the company during the summer (ie. You may need to find/pay for temporary housing during the summer) • Accepting an offer means a commitment to working with that company for the ENTIRE summer Expectations • The IPO will hire an MBA student to be the central program coordinator.
