Define the term organelle

Label organelles in animal and plant cells

Increasing Difficulty

Describe the function of different organelles within cells

Mitochondria

• The mitochondria are an organelle that make

ATP, which we use for energy

• This process is called respiration

• They have a double membrane and a fluid inside called a matrix which is filled with enzymes involved in the reactions of respiration

Glossary Definition

Organelle: these are the organs of a cell. They are the smallest component of a cell which carries out a specific function

• Copy this table and fill it in for each organelle!

Research time

organelle Function

organelle mitochondria nucleus

Plasma membrane chloroplast nucleoid

Cell wall ribosomes vacuole

Function

Site of aerobic respiration

Where DNA is stored (inside a nuclear membrane)

Controls what goes in and out of a cell

Where photosynthesis occurs, contains chlorophyll

Where DNA is stored in prokaryotes

(no membrane)

Stops plant and bacterial cells shrinking or bursting due to osmosis, made of cellulose

Where proteins are produced

Area for sugars and salts to be stored in plant cells

Modelling Time

• In your table groups decide if you are going to model a plant or animal call

• your model must include the organelles you researched (only appropriate ones!)

Market Place

• The number….. ‘s are going to stay put

• The rest of you are going to move to another group, the person from the group you move to is going to explain their model to you

www/ebi

• On a post it note write down a What went well and an even better if for the group you visited
