Anatomy & Physiology Syllabus Mrs. McDaniel gretta.jordan@hsv-k12.org Room 159 Tutoring/special assistance: Tuesdays at 7:15 a.m. and/or Thursdays until 4pm. Course Description: In this lab-based course one studies the structure, function, and dysfunction of the human body by emphasizing body systems. This course is especially recommended for students interested in medical fields. Grade: 10-12 Prerequisites: Biology or Honors Biology Course Objectives: A. Students will learn basic facts associated with human anatomy and physiology. B. Students will develop an understanding of the relationships between structure and function of the various parts of the human body. C. Students will develop an understanding of the important mechanisms that maintain homeostasis and pathological conditions that may result in their dysfunction. Classroom Expectations: 1. Be in your seat and ready to start class when the tardy bell rings. 2. Be prepared for class each day. Bring pencil, paper, and computer to class; pen and lab manual to lab. You will need the following supplies for this course: Loose leaf notebook (binder) with loose leaf paper, please include empty page protectors for any class handouts. A box of disposable gloves. If you are in 11th grade, bring a box of Kleenex. If you are in 12th grade, bring a bottle of hand sanitizer. If you are in 10th grade, bring disinfectant wipes. 3. Contact lenses will NOT be worn while in the lab. 4. Follow all safety rules in the lab. 5. This period is for science only. Any other work may be taken up and not returned. 6. Surfing websites unrelated to the lesson during class is unacceptable. Students who violate this rule will be subject to disciplinary action. 7. Respect the rights of others. For example, no talking while the teacher or a student is addressing the class. 8. Follow all school rules: food, drinks, tobacco, CELL PHONES/electronics (no ear buds), DRESS CODE, etc. If you did not receive a student handbook, please ask your homeroom teacher to provide you with one. 9. When problem solving is involved, work must be shown in order to receive credit. This statement applies to homework, lab reports, and tests. 10. It is important to keep up daily, as learning new concepts frequently involves building on old ones. If you feel you are not understanding the material, it is important that you talk to your teacher about getting help BEFORE your grades begin to decline. Tutoring is available before and after school on selected days each week. See your teacher for details. Also, students in the National Honor Society offer tutoring in all subjects. 11. Cheating on any homework assignment, quiz, or test will not be tolerated. Copying or sharing homework, classwork, labs, or other assignments will be considered cheating, and both parties will receive a zero. Students using a cell phone during tests or quizzes will be reported to the administration via a disciplinary referral for cheating. All infractions involving cheating will be reported to both the Honor Society Committee and your parents or legal guardians. If the class rules are not followed, detention will be assigned. Grading Procedures Grades are based on the approved Huntsville City Schools grading scale: A = 90-100% B = 80 to 89% C = 70 to 79% D = 60 to 69% F = Below 60% Huntsville City School Grading Distribution: Grades are determined based on the following procedures: 60% -- tests 30% -- daily work including quizzes and lab reports 10% -- homework All assignments are due the following class day unless otherwise noted on the calendar. Calendar A nine week calendar created in accordance with the HCS Chemistry pacing guide includes all assignments, labs, and tests. This will be made available to all students via Edmodo for each nine weeks grading period. To access the HCS Chemistry pacing guide, which includes all units of study, reviews, and exams, go to www.huntsvillecityschools.org; click on departments; click on curriculum and instruction; click on secondary programs; click on downloads – pacing guide for Chemistry. We will also post this in your child’s Edmodo group.
