COURSE GUIDELINES FOR EARTH SCIENCE 8 EARTH SCIENCE I. Course Description This course will focus on Earth Science related topics: how to use science to study the earth; foundations of the earth (history, structures, land features, earthquakes, volcanoes, and plate tectonics); rocky materials (minerals, ores, rocks, fossils, and soil); water (oceans, seas, lakes, rivers); atmosphere (clean air, weather prediction, storms and climate); infinity and beyond (sun, moon, planets, stars, galaxies, and universe). Throughout this study other academic disciplines will be addressed to the connection they have with this branch of science. II. Course Goals and Objectives Upon successful completion of Earth Science the student will be able to: Understand the various topics and concepts in Earth Science from the perspective of a Christian worldview Seek God’s wisdom to apply biblical principles to those topics and concepts Understand that science is limited but God is not Take the knowledge available from their own and others’ observations and see the hand of the Creator III. Sequence (Tentative) First Nine Weeks: Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Second Nine Weeks: Chapter 8, 9, 10,11, 12, 13 Third Nine Weeks: Chapter 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 Fourth Nine Weeks: Chapter 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 IV. Textbook Earthscience 4th edition Bible V. VI. Grade Calculation Grading will be calculated as the percentage of total points possible Grading Scale A: 100-90 B: 89-80 C: 79-70 F: 69-0 VII. Homework Homework will be designed to reinforce concepts introduced through lecture or readings. Homework must be turned in at the designated time during class on the due date and must be complete to receive a grade. Failure to complete homework will result in ninth hour. Late work will not be accepted unless the absence has been excused by the office. Any missed work must be turned in no later than one day after the absence. (Ex: Absent Monday: work must be turned in by Wednesday of that week) A student that is absent for more than one day due to illness or family emergency will be dealt with on an individual basis. EXTRA CREDIT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE VIII. Classroom Rules: ALL SCHOOL POLICIES WILL BE ENFORCED Tardiness: You are expected to arrive on time, be in your assigned seat and prepared to begin when the bell rings. Preparation for Class: This includes having a writing utensil (black or blue ink pen), textbook and paper. You should also be prepared to participate in class discussions, have your homework assignments completed and be ready for any quiz, test, or other such evaluation. Your classmates are not responsible to “loan you” paper or a pen. BE PREPARED! 3 R’s: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, AND RELIABILITY Respect yourself, your other classmates, and your instructor. Be responsible through abiding by this document of course guidelines and expectations. Be reliable by coming to class with the proper attitude because you will only get out of the class what you put into the class. I look forward to having you in class this year.
