The Grapes of Wrath – Final Project
Scrapbook Description:
You will create a scrapbook that represents a main character or a central theme of The Grapes of Wrath.
Scrapbook Requirements:
1. The scrapbook must be at least 10 pages long. Each component must be on a separate sheet of paper.
2. The scrapbook must demonstrate that you have read AND understood the book.
3. The scrapbook must include writing and artifacts. An artifact is a physical item that is put in your
scrapbook.
4. Each artifact, piece of writing, or drawing must be accompanied by a rectangle that explains why you
chose that artifact/writing/drawing to represent the character or an event from the book. This
explanation must be written in at least 3-5 complete sentences. It may be placed on the front or back
of the scrapbook page.
5. The book needs to be created with the idea that a scrapbook is usually a hodgepodge, a mishmash, a
mixture of multiple things. Therefore, one type of material should not dominate the scrapbook.
6. The book needs a front cover and an abstract (or introduction) that gives a brief (3 paragraph)
description of the novel, the character and the scrapbook.
Suggestions for Possible Scrapbook Items
1. Letters to and from the character. Attach
envelopes and slip the letters inside.
2. Ticket stubs or receipts — with an explanation.
3. Drawings by the character.
4. Poems by the character.
5. Diary or journal entries by the character.
6. Memories from the reader’s life that the novel
reveals.
7. Photos of the character.
8. Magazine or newspaper articles that might
interest the character.
9. A birth certificate or some other type of official
document, for the character.
10. An award the character could have received
from school, church, military, or some other
organization.
11. Travel brochure or a map
12. A postcard someone sent the character —
include picture and text.
13. A list of 5 items the character would take on
their journey, pictures and explanation
included.
14. 10 commandments for the character—how
s/he wants to live life. These reveal what’s
important to this character, what values the
character has.
15. Create a life line for the character, showing
major forks, or decisions/events, that affected
the character’s life. Add drawings.
16. Character collage—pictures, words, sayings that
reveal character’s personality.
17. A “souvenir” from a notable event
18. And more, more, many more…
Paper Prompt:
Who is the most significant character in The Grapes of Wrath? Your paper can discuss the ways this character
drives the plot, how the character influences the novel’s themes, the character’s development over the course
of the novel, etc. Most importantly, your paper must convey why your chosen character is the most important
or significant. Your paper must demonstrate a true understanding of the character, use abundant textual
evidence, and provide original analysis.
Paper Requirements:
1. Your paper must be 3-5 pages in length
2. MLA guidelines apply (headings, margins, in text citations, double spaced, etc.)
3. Your paper must include only your own analysis. No outside sources may be used.
