Course Description:
This is the third year of the honors integrated math sequence. The
curriculum is taught using hands-on, task-based learning that allows students to
develop a solid mathematical understanding of the underlying mathematics
principles and includes practice with those skills. Topics covered will include:
Functions and Inverses, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Polynomial
Functions, Rational Expressions and Functions, Geometric Modeling,
Trigonometric Functions, Modeling with Functions, Statistics, Series, Polar Form
of Complex Numbers, Parametric Equations, and ACT Preparation.
Rules:
- Be on time to class. Students who are not in their seats when the bell
rings will be marked as tardy.
- No cell phones. Using cell phones in class, for any reason, will result in a
deduction of participation points and will affect your citizenship.
- All school and district rules will be followed for attendance, dress code,
electronic devices, honesty, etc.
- RESPECT – the subject of mathematics, yourself, your classmates, and
your teacher
Materials Needed:
Daily required materials: ThinkPad laptop, pencil, 70 page spiral notebook,
Graphing Calculator (TI-83or equivalent) – Your cell phone may NOT be used as
a substitute for a calculator. Cell phones are not acceptable to use on the ACT
or Core Test, so it is important for you to be familiar with the calculator you will
be using on these tests.
You are expected to keep a written, organized notebook with ALL notes
for this course. Points for notes will count in the Practice Standard.
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory to your success in this course. Being absent
does not excuse you from the assignments or lessons you missed. In-class
activities can be found on Canvas, and you should complete these before you
return to class. Keep in mind that the class discussions and presentations are a
key element to these activities and cannot be replicated. If you are absent, you
should plan to get any notes you missed from a classmate. All Pearson
homework assignments include online tutorials and learning aids, and you will be
expected to complete those assignments by the assigned due date, even if you
are absent. Activity excuses do not excuse you from the due date. Extended
absences due to illness will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Attendance also affects your grade in the Practice Standard. Points will be
awarded daily based on the activities and assignments done in class. Students
arriving on time will receive full points, students who are tardy (for any reason)
will receive half points, and students who are absent will receive zero points.
Points lost due to attendance issues may be made up after school. See the
Practice Standards handout for further information.
Homework:
Homework is assigned daily. All homework assignments will be posted on
your Pearson account as well as on Canvas. Homework is due the next class
period after it was assigned for full credit and will be counted late if not
completed before 7am on the due date. Late homework will be accepted for 10
calendar days after the assigned date, with a 10% deduction for each day the
assignment is late. All work for your homework will be submitted in your Canvas
account, and must be completed in order to retake tests/quizzes.
Quizzes:
Expect daily homework quizzes. If you score less than a 3 on any quiz,
you are expected to come in for extra help before school, during 1st lunch, or
after school. You will have multiple opportunities to improve your score on those
topics on future quizzes and tests. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. The
lowest 3 quizzes (maximum of one quiz in any topic) will be dropped from your
grade.
Tests:
Tests include the Midterm and Final Exams, and perhaps an additional unit
test. Unit tests and Midterms can be retaken for full credit; however, students
must have ALL homework completed in order to do a retake. Test retakes will
ONLY be given before school, after school, or during 1st lunch. The deadline for
test retakes is 7 school days after the original test date.
Tests must be made up the day you return for full credit. Any made up
after the day you return will only receive half credit. This also shortens the time
you have to retake the test, so it is in your best interest to be here on test day.
Extra credit: This is RARELY offered and when it is, it must be completed within
the class period in which it is offered. Extra credit cannot be made up if you
were absent on the day this rare event occurred. Think of it like Halley ’s Comet
– if you miss it you have to wait 75 years for your next chance to see it.
Grades: All grades will be updated at least twice a week in SIS. This is where
you will find your official class grade. Grades that are posted in Pearson and
Canvas only reflect your participation, homework and occasional quizzes for the
course and do not include tests or additional assessments which are major parts
of your grade. Please refer to SIS for your current overall grade.
Citizenship:
Citizenship is based on your contribution to the learning atmosphere in the
classroom, as well as your attendance. Poor attendance will result in poor
citizenship!
H: Promotes a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom and has no
more than 2 absences or tardies
S: Does not detract from the positive learning atmosphere in the
classroom and/or has no more than 4 absences and/or tardies
N: Detracts from positive learning atmosphere in the classroom and/or has
5 absences and/or tardies
UA: Has more than 5 absences and/or tardies. UA’s must be made up in
attendance school in order to for citizenship credit to be reinstated.
U: Promotes an atmosphere adverse to learning in the classroom. Note
that all academic dishonesty will be referred to the administration and
will result in zero score for the assignment and a U for citizenship.
I understand and agree to comply with these rules.
