Essential Question:
How are electrons arranged in an atom and how does this affect their
placement on the periodic table?
Rationale:
The purpose of this unit is to continue the study of the atom. We need to focus on
the electron because it is responsible for the behavior of the atom and the
properties of the element that we will be studying for the remainder of the course.
We will learn how the arrangement of the electrons in the atom corresponds to the
arrangement of the elements of the periodic table.
Objectives: After completing this lap, students will be able to:
1. Differentiate between electron arrangement in different atomic models.
a. Describe the problems with the Rutherford atomic model.
b. Identify how the Bohr model is different.
c. Describe energies and positions of electrons according to quantum
mechanics model.
d. Describe the shapes of the orbitals related to the different sublevels.
2. Write an electron configuration for an element.
a. Be able to identify three rules for how electrons are arranged in atoms.
b. Explain why some elements differ from the standard rules.
3. Explain how the arrangement of electrons in atoms corresponds to their
placement on the periodic table.

1. Watch the Video Crash Course Chemistry #5: The Electron, posted on my
weebly, and answer the questions on the Video worksheet included with your
lap. Due K 11/16
