Lesson Strategies: Word walls and word sorts
Standards:
1. Use prior knowledge from previous lessons.
2. Show the relationship between writing and naming chemical formulas
3. Assess the effectiveness of the lesson that was presented.
Lesson Objectives:
Chl 6c – Write names of compounds from their formulas.
Lesson Introduction:
The lesson will begin with the teacher having students complete the bellwork assignment. The
teacher will give a brief oral assessment of the symbols and charges of monatomic and polyatomic ions.
The teacher will explain the rules of nomenclature and how it relates to naming acids, binary ionic
compounds and binary covalent compounds.
Lesson Activities and Procedures:
Word Walls: The teacher will choose chemical words that end in the “ate”. He will provide students
with the list of the words. The teacher will have a word wall placed on a wall in the classroom. The word
wall will have each chemical name placed on a note card. The teacher gives each student a card. The
teacher will have a student come up and place the word under the correct letter. The cards will have
two words on them in order to fully name the chemical. Although this may seem elementary, a good
understanding of each word can be gained by going through the meaning of each one as they are placed
on the board. This will be done at the beginning of the week so students can view the words all week
and begin to memorize them. The words on the word wall are:
Potassium bisulfate
- Aluminum potassium sulfate
- Sodium thiosulfate
- Magnesium silicate
- Sodium bicarbonate
- Isoamyl acetate
- Barium sulfate
- Potassium dichromate
- Magnesium sulfate
- Sodium nitrate
- Calcium carbonate
Word Sorts: After the teacher has gone over the words on the word wall, he will have the students
complete the word sorts activity. The students will make different categories on their own and sort the
words into the correct categories. This activity requires the student to have a good understanding of the
word in order to sort it into different categories. After they have finished, the students will share their
different categories and sorts.
End of Lesson:
TSW use prior knowledge of ions and nomenclature skills in order to name chemical
compounds.

Adaptations for Differentiated Learning:
This lesson is designed to help students recall prior information and actively engage them in the
lesson. The word wall will demonstrate the diversity of the students by comparing their prior
knowledge and application ability. It will also enable the teacher to assess their comprehension level
when questioned about what they have learned.
