Second Grade Valentine’s Homework Project Winter break is about to start! This means that February is just around the corner. As Valentine’s Day slowly approaches, it is Corvian tradition to be untraditional. In lieu of the typical valentines that children usually give one another on Valentine’s Day, we have our students make homemade valentines by writing valentine poems made especially for each classmate! We realize this takes longer than buying the ready-made cards but what a special keepsake and treasure to share with a friend! It is also a fantastic writing activity! We are asking that you help your child write a haiku poem for each classmate. WHAT IS A HAIKU? A haiku is an unrhymed three-line poem. It is based on a traditional Japanese poetic form. The traditional pattern is to write the first and last lines with five syllables each, and the middle line with seven syllables. In other words, the pattern of syllables looks like this: Line 1: 5 syllables Line 2: 7 syllables Line 3: 5 syllables Haiku: Sue has a bright smile A sunny disposition She makes us happy If the act of writing is hard for your child then you may do the writing for him/her, or let him/her type them on the computer. Use your judgment to decide keeping in mind the purpose of the activity. You can decorate or display the poems anyway that your child would like. Please make sure that you read through your child’s Valentine’s before you send them to school to make sure that he/she has written only kind things about his/her classmates. You have well over a month to work on this assignment. You could do one classmate a night and be finished before Valentine’s Day. Please make sure you don’t wait until the last minute to start this project, as I know it would become stressful and overwhelming. This should be a fun experience for you and your child as you spend some time working together. For our Valentine’s Day celebration on February 10th, your child should come to school with a card for each of his/her classmates that you have made together. Have fun with this interactive homework project! Thank you in advance for your help and support!
