5th grade Valentine’s Day Project- Due: February 10, 2016 As Valentine’s Day slowly approaches, it is CCS tradition to be untraditional. In lieu of the typical valentines children usually give one another on Valentine’s Day, we have our students make homemade valentines by writing valentine poems made especially for each classmate! We realize this takes longer than buying the readymade cards but what a special keepsake and treasure to share with a friend! It is also a fantastic writing activity! Because of the length of time it may take to create these beautiful poems, we’d like to offer the project directions earlier just in case your family wants to get a head start. We are asking that your child choose from the following types of poems to write a Valentine for each classmate: a couplet (a two-line poem that rhymes), an acrostic poem (write a word or name vertically, then write a word or phrase to describe that word or name that begins with the corresponding letter), a cinquain (a five-line poem), a haiku (an unrhymed three-lined poem), or a diamante poem (a poem in the shape of a diamond). *Please do not send any food or candy treats to school with your child for Valentine’s Day. We will not be able to pass them out. Examples of each are below: Cinquain: line 1 - one word (noun) a title or name of the subject line 2 - two words (adjectives) describing the title line 3 - three words (verbs) describing an action related to the title line 4 - four words describing a feeling about the title, a complete sentence line 5 - one word referring back to the title of the poem Ex. This should be a fun experience for you child. On Valentine’s Day your child should come to school with a homemade card for each of his/her classmates. Thank you in advance for your help and support!
