Online Course Orientation





Are you self-motivated?
Do you consider yourself a self-educator?
Are you responsible?
Are you capable of managing your time well?
Are you willing to commit to a daily physical fitness
regime that meets the ACSM requirements?
If you could answer YES to all five of these questions,
you have a chance to do well in this course.

Online courses are “different” & not meant to
be interpreted as “more difficult” than the
typical lecture setting.
 There are no 2nd chances in an online course so you
should not ask for one. All deadlines are posted on D2L
and in your syllabus. It is your responsibility to keep up
in the course.
 Technical difficulties/hardships (no internet) are not an
excuse for not completing your work on time.
 There are no daily reminders in an online course. This is
not an excuse for missing work or simply not progressing
through the course.

You are responsible for understanding how to use
D2L prior to beginning this course.
It is NOT the instructor’s responsibility to teach you
how to log-in and navigate through this course.
If you are having difficulty using D2L, you are
encouraged to spend extra time learning the
platform, attend one of the D2L workshops offered
by Gordon State College or simply drop the course
and retake it during another semester after you are
proficient in using D2L.



Students are expected to use their GORDON STATE
COLLEGE email to correspond with the instructor.
The D2L email client DOES NOT CLEARLY notify the
instructor of a message; please do not use it.
The instructor WILL NOT respond to any off
campus email addresses (yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail,
etc.).

Please read CAREFULLY and FULLY understand the
course syllabus that is posted on D2L under
COURSE INFORMATION. This will serve as an
agreement between the student and the instructor
on how you will be evaluated in this course.

Buy the text book and read each chapter thoroughly.
Use the PowerPoints as an OUTLINE for your note
taking while reading the chapters. Fill in the blanks
when necessary. If you plan to just study the online
PowerPoints and not read the chapters in preparation
for your quizzes and exam, you will have difficulty
doing well.
Review your notes and complete your weekly
assignments. You must review the online
PowerPoints before you are allowed to take the online
quizzes & exams.
Complete other work/discussions as assigned.

You are required to attend and participate in two on campus
physical fitness assessments. Please dress out in appropriate
workout attire and bring a writing utensil & Gordon student
ID.
◦ Dates, times and sign up information will be emailed to you with more
than enough advance notice.

You will be evaluated in the following assessments:

miss these assessment dates and times*


You are responsible for researching a fitness
facility in your area, one of which you would join if
money were not an issue.
Specific instructions are attached to the assignment
on D2L. This project must be submitted as an
attachment through the D2L DROPBOX.


You are responsible for preparing a lab report
based upon the results from the initial on campus
fitness assessments.
Specific instructions are attached to the assignment
on D2L. This project must be submitted as an
attachment (word file) through the D2L DROPBOX.



The chapter quizzes will be 10 multiple choice
questions from your chapter readings. You will
take these under the QUIZ link on D2L.
You only have ONE attempt at these quizzes and
you have 50 minutes to complete the quizzes.
Make sure you are prepared!
You may find the “answers keys” in the book.
However, I will caution you; several answers are
marked incorrectly by the publisher in the printed
keys. Read the chapters and answer accordingly to
the chapter reading.


Using the FITT principle, you will design a 1 month
cardio AND strength training program based upon
your individual goals. These programs must meet
the minimum ACSM weekly workout requirements.
Specific instructions are attached each assignment
on D2L. This project must be submitted as an
attachment (word file) through the D2L DROPBOX.



You will log your food and beverage intake
for 3 days over the semester.
This information will be entered and analyzed
by the SUPERTRACKER at
www.choosemyplate.gov.
Specific instructions are attached to the assignment
on D2L. This project must be submitted as an
attachment (word, pdf, xml) through the D2L
DROPBOX.

There will be ONE exam covering all 6 chapters
◦ This exam will be taken online through the QUIZ
section of D2L.
◦ You are allowed only one attempt and must
submit your exam within 100 minutes of starting
the assessment. Elapsed time will result in a
ZERO grade. Make sure you are prepared!

You are required to exercise/workout on your own time
according to the ACSM recommendations.
◦ 3-5 times per week cardio
◦ 2-3 times per week FULL BODY weight lifting (8-10 different exercises per
workout, minimum of 2 sets, reps vary due to goals)


You must document your workouts over the course of the
semester and show a minimum of 36 cardiovascular exercise
sessions and 24 full body strength training sessions.
Specific instructions are attached to the assignment on D2L.
This project must be submitted as an attachment (word, pdf,
xml) through the D2L DROPBOX.





This will take place on the Discussion Board of D2L and will allow for
online involvement between students on various topics related to the
course.
You will earn 1 point each time you post something directly related
to the course (post a new question, answer a question, post
comment, etc). The max number of points/posts you can earn is 25
points.
No points will be given for postings not related to the course subject
matter (such as “way to go” in a response to another post.)
If you have a question specifically for the instructor, do not post
them on the discussion board and expect an immediate response.
Please email the instructor if you are expecting a timely response.
Points for the discussion forum will be totaled at the end of the
semester. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with their
total number of posts. You can do this through a tracking report in
D2L.

Make-Up Work
◦ There are NO MAKE-UPS given for any of the online
components.
◦ In order to be considered for a make-up for the on
campus fitness assessments, the student must
supply the instructor with verifiable, written
documentation within one week of the on campus
meeting. See syllabus for complete details.

Injuries, Illness or Pregnancies
◦ Should you become injured, ill or pregnant and are
not able to participate in various components of
this course, such as the required exercise, please
provide the instructor with proper medical
documentation so further discussion and decisions
about course completion can be made.

Accommodations of Disability
◦ If you need academic adjustments for a disability,
you must go through the process of receiving
approved accommodations through the Student
Counseling and Disability Services Office.

Academic Dishonesty
◦ In other words CHEATING – it will not be tolerated.
