Guide for the Organisational Diagnostic Tool
Overview of the Organisational Capacity Diagnostic Tool
Purpose - “A Baseline Health Check”
•
•
•
•
The Organisational Capacity Diagnostic Tool enables community organisations to create a baseline
and identify areas where they need to develop their strategy and their capacity to deliver on their
strategy.
The image on the next page shows how the dimensions fit together.
This tool is designed primarily for organisations to use internally. It is designed to start a conversation
within the organisation and assist decision-making.
It can be a tool for the community organisational leader to discuss the organisation with their
corporate peer. The tool enables a structured conversation between peer pairs and provides a
baseline for the Peer Development Plan Outcomes.
Using the Tool
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
There are thirteen dimensions of the organisation. These were originally separated into five strategic
dimensions and eight operational dimensions. These have all been combined for simplicity of use.
On each dimension, three scenarios are identified, corresponding to:
(1) an opportunity for increased capacity
(2) a moderate level of capacity in place
(3) a high level of capacity in place.
To use the tool, first read the three scenarios given for each characteristic and circle the scenario that
best describes the situation within your organisation.
Also record any comments, particularly significant challenges or strengths that relate to that
characteristic and enter the total score in the summary row.
Using the Summary & Priorities page
•
•
•
Having scored your organisation in relation to each characteristic you next calculate an average score
for the dimension by dividing the total score by the number of questions for that dimension.
When you look at the average scores you can choose to discuss the strong dimensions and how to
enhance those even further. You may also choose to discuss the weaker dimensions and what you
need to do to mitigate any risks.
You are requested to submit the Summary & Priorities page, together with your pair’s Development
Plan by the 31st July 2013.
The Diagnostic Triangle
The following image shows how the 13 dimensions are related.
