Comparative World Literature Joanne Ploeger 663-2565 j.ploeger@laschools.net This English Course is designed to give you a foundation in comparative literature and continuation of the development of composition, grammar, usage, vocabulary, spelling, and speaking skills. In corporate in the course is a historical or thematic survey of major world writers from the ancient to the contemporary. You will also build skills in research, logic, media and image analysis and critical thinking. Supplies McDougal Littell Literature and Vocabulary from Classical Roots (blue book), as well as other novels and outside readings Three ring notebook with dividers Composition notebook (100 pages) Pens (black or blue, and red) *You need to bring these to every class period. Organizing Student Materials Titles: Put your name, date, and class period on everything you hand in. Notebooks: Composition notebooks shall be kept neatly. Do not tear any papers from this notebook. You must have a composition notebook and a three ring binder with dividers. Bring both binder and notebook everyday to class. Over time, you will be given instructions for organizing your notebook. Missing and Late Assignments At the end of each study unit, you will go over that unit’s assignments using Power School. Any missing work is due the next class period, for 50% of the points possible. You will earn a zero for any work still not turned in after that deadline. Corrections For any test, quiz, or writing assignment, you can make corrections to improve your grade. Corrections are due the following class period after the test/quiz or assignment is returned to you. Specifics for making corrections: - Multiple choice: write why you had the wrong answer, circle the correct answer. - Short Answer: re-write the answer - Essays: you may one extra day to make changes. Retype and turn in with original. Your Responsibilities Bring your text, notebook, binder, pencil and/or pen. Practice your best manners. NO PROFANITY will be tolerated. Take off hats prior to class commencing. No eating or drinking in class. Stay in your seats during instruction time. Turn off and put away cell phones. Dispose of trash properly. Participate in class! Grades: Your grade will be based on assignments, quizzes, projects, and tests. IF you do the entire daily assignments (homework) before class, you earn 100% on it. Your late daily assignment earns only 50%. Missing work is entered as a zero. Be prepared for a daily quiz. Use Power School to monitor your grades. Office Hours: My office hours are Monday through Thursday until 3:30 PM. I am also available during my 2A and 3B planning period. For other times, please make an appointment.
