Vocabulary and Roman/US Governments • Nationalism – A strong sense of loyalty to one’s country • Alliance - Agreement to work towards a common goal • Triple Entente – alliance between Britain, France and Russia • Central Powers – German Empire and Austria-Hungary Nationalism and World War I • After the French Revolution, the French people developed a strong sense of nationalism, which quickly spread throughout Europe • Nationalism led to city-states unifying in the countries of Italy and Germany • By 1900, nationalism may have unified, but it also created harsh rivalries between countries • Competition was mostly for raw materials as well as colonies in Asia and Africa • Within the rivalries, alliances formed as well, specifically the Triple Entente and the Central Powers • June 1914 – Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary is visiting Serbia and is assassinated by a Bosnian national • Bosnians were unhappy that they were dominated by Austrian rule and wished to unite with Serbia • After the assassination, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia • Serbia was in an alliance with Russia, who then declared war on Austria-Hungary • Within weeks, almost all of Europe had entered the war A Brutal War • This war is often called the Great War, and dragged on for four years • Both sides fought from trenches designed to protect soldiers as well as to hold their positions • New technology made the war especially gruesome • • • • • Machine guns Airplanes Tanks Poison gas Submarines • In 1917, Russia enters their Communist Revolution and withdraws from the war and makes peace with the Central Powers • USA enters the war on the side of the Triple Entente and helps to push Germany back • 1918, Germany surrenders • 10 million soldiers dead • 7 million civilians dead Outcome and Impact of the War • 1919 – the Treaty of Versailles is signed, ending the war • Under this treaty: • Germany accepts full responsibility • Germany pays several billion in damages • Germany loses many territories • THIS TREATY DID NOT EASE TENSIONS IN EUROPE!!!! • The German people were angry and humiliated • These problems reappear 20 years later……
