The Importance of the 15th Amendment By: Dr. Artrip In my opinion, the provision of the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution that protects the rights of Americans to vote in elections to elect their leaders, regardless of their race or color, is one of the most important amendments to the United States Constitution. First of all, this provision states,“ any American cannot be denied the right to vote, based on race, color, or being a former slave.” This is so significant. I believe all American citizens should have a right to vote. We should all be treated equally and that is what the 14th Amendment (Equal Protection Clause) to the Constitution provides. In addition, the 15th Amendment is one of the three Reconstruction Amendments (along with the 13th and 14th amendments). The period of reconstruction focused on how to treat former slaves. Why should not all men (or women) be created equal and have the same right to vote? Finally, the Fifteenth Amendment is part of the United States Constitution for a reason. Our founding fathers had high expectations. We need to live up to them! In conclusion, the Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is one of the most important amendments to our nation.
