13 th Amendment—Ends slavery

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

14 th Amendment—Gives citizenship

All persons born or naturalized in the United

States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the

State wherein they reside.

15 th Amendment—Gives right to vote

The right of citizens of the United

States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United

States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude

Southern state legislatures adopted poll taxes , instituted grandfather clauses , or required citizens to pass literacy tests in order to be able to vote.

These voting restrictions were all loopholes, or legal ways to get around the 15 th amendment because they did not say
