Supplemental Instruction: Increasing Student Engagement, Performance and

Retention

In the past forty years cognitive scientists and educators have developed numerous strategies to help students become more actively engaged in learning.

Supplemental Instruction is an effective tool to promote collaborative peer-led learning, and institutions in several countries are implementing the program with great success. This interactive presentation will discuss why today’s students need assistance in developing effective learning strategies, cognitive science based principles that serve as the foundation for SI, and the ways in which SI increases student motivation, confidence, and performance.

10:15-10:30 Break

10:30-11:30 Supplemental Instruction at UMKC: Marion Stone

Supplemental Instruction at UMKC

An overview of the Supplemental Instruction Program at UMKC will be presented.

Use of these peer-assisted study sessions, facilitated by “SI leaders” increases retention in historically difficult courses, improves grades in these courses and increases student graduation rates. This presentation will describe SI and appropriate ways to utilize these services.

What is a Master Assessment?

The diversity of master degree programs at UMKC makes assessment of Master Degree student outcome challenging. Common learning outcomes between our diverse programs were identified and used to develop an assessment rubric for master level writing. The steps in this process, the rubric, and initial outcomes will be shared with the participants.

Presenter: Barbara Glessner-Fines, Associate Dean, School of Law

What's New in Blackboard?

Blackboard Learn has a lot of exciting new features, which will make it easier than ever to design effective and engaging course sites. Learn about new Blackboard features that will simplify the way you deploy and grade assessments, encourage student participation, and much more!

Presenter: Andrew Buckingham, Instructional Technology Services

SI Online: An Innovative and Interactive Approach to Peer Instruction

This presentation will review the history of Supplemental Instruction (SI) and how it came to fulfillment online for the first time through collaboration with the UMKC School of Dentistry’s

Admission Enhancement Program (AEP). The presentation will demonstrate the use of “Tablet

Technology” utilized to enhance the student’s knowledge of important course material as well as the interactive use of Blackboard Collaborate.

Presenter: Carrie Hanson, Assistant Professor, School of Dentistry

Research for the Undergraduate Student

Using strategic investment funds from the UM-System, UMKC is working to build a more robust undergraduate research program that will impact more students and faculty. In this session, participants will join in conversation with experienced faculty mentors and undergraduate researchers to discuss:

· Characteristics of Undergraduate Research that make it a "high impact" educational practice;

· Strategies for encouraging students to participate in undergraduate research;

· Ways to align undergraduate research with faculty career goals and program/departmental needs.

Presenter: Jane Greer, Associate Professor, English Language and Literature

RooWriter 101

Description: What is the RooWriter? How does it help UMKC students improve their writing and reading skills? How can RooWriter results enable instructors to enhance their teaching? This session will address these questions and preview the new Instructor/Advisor reports that will be available in Fall 2014. Henrietta Rix Wood, the Coordinator of Writing Assessment, will lead a discussion about how the RooWriter reports can be used in classrooms and for advising students.

Presenter: Henrietta Rix Wood, Assistant Teaching Professor and Coordinator of Writing

Assessment, Department of English

Interactive Instructions and Remediation with Adobe Captivate

You have a student who struggles with the basics of Algebra. How can you ensure that your students are learning concepts before they move on to harder materials or classes? What about adding something extra to your online learning material? One way you can do it is through the remediation feature in Adobe Captivate. Good teaching is knowing what works and what needs modification. Adobe Captivate enables you to design supplemental instruction, collect data on what is working and what is not working, and modify your file without having to create new lectures from scratch. This session will introduce you features that allow students to access supplemental instructions from anywhere and with most web-enabled devices (e.g., iPhone,

Android Smartphones, tablets, etc.).

Presenter: David Ta (UMKC Online)

Anchor/Discourse Discussion

Now that UMKC has completed the first year of the new General Education Model, these experts will discuss their experience(s) providing Anchor and Discourse courses. Strategies that provided excellent learning experiences will be presented, along with pitfall to avoid. Time will be spent allowing the participants to ask questions, and receive guidance as new courses are developed.

Presenters: Crystal Doss, Lecturer, English Language Literature and Scott Baker, Associate

Professor and Chair, Foreign Languages Literature

The New Online Writing and Reading Intensive Archive at UMKC If you are looking for ideas about how to teach writing and reading effectively in your classes, this session will introduce you to an important resource: the new online Writing and Reading Intensive Archive at UMKC.

This archive, sponsored by the University Writing and Reading Board (UWRB), features a blog and resources ranging from productive assignments to sample syllabi from Writing Intensive classes at UMKC. During this session, Richard Delaware of the UWRB will lead a discussion about the kind of information that would be useful to post in the archive--your suggestions are needed and welcomed!

Presenter: Richard Delaware, Department of Mathematics

Introducing VoiceThread

Classroom collaboration today can happen in many ways: face-to-face talking, text discussions, audio recording, and multi-media file sharing. An instructor might have used at least one of the formats in teaching, but how about combining all them all in one simple application? UMKC instructors and students can now enjoy more dynamic media-centric communications with

VoiceThread, a web-based software that is integrated with both Blackboard and Moodle. This session offers an introduction to the basics, “how to”s, and a discussion on the best practices using VoiceThread.

Presenter: Jing Zou, Instructional Technology Services

Supplemental Instruction

Created especially for Faculty with SI support in their classes or those more interested in possibility adding SI support, this training focuses on the impact that the SI Leader will have on others in the class, as well as the benefits for the instructors themselves. Topics discussed include the difference between a Teaching Assistant and an SI Leader; SI Leaders dos and don’ts, and relationship between Faculty and SI Supervisors and Leaders. The majority of the time, however, will be spent hands-on; learning engaging and impactful SI session strategies.

Presenters: Marion Stone, Director Academic Support and Mentoring and Saundra McGuire,

Educational Consultant
