important events?
It was between the cavilers (Wanted the king to stay in power) and roundheads
(Roundheads wanted to have a limited king). The civil war was about the idea of the
limited or absolute king. 1647 Charles I is captured, 1649 Charles I is killed.
Explain who Louis XIV was and
why he was an absolute ruler?
Ruler of France known as the “Sun King” and he was an absolute ruler because he
would control the government fully and would try to control all aspects of his peoples
life’s.
Explain who Peter the Great
was and why he was he an
absolute ruler?
He was a ruler of Russia that would work towards westernizing his country by
controlling the nobility and taking over land giving Russia a warm water port to rule
from.
Explain who Puritans were and
why were they important to
the English Civil War?
A religiously conservative branch of the church of England they would want to cleanse
the church of all catholic influences. They are important to the revolution because they
would start the process of trying to limit the rule of King Charles I.
Explain what Divine Right is?
Similar to the mandate of Heaven, it said that the king was the absolute ruler over the
king’s country and the life’s of that kings peoples.

The idea that the ruler was the supreme ruler of a country.
Explain why the Edict of Nantes
was important to France?
The edict of Nantes allowed for the protection of the French Huguenots from catholic
persecution.
Who was Philip II?
Ruler of Spain that would fight to spread the Catholic influences and would defend the
Catholic church from attacks.
Explain what the Thirty Years’
War was?
War between germen states that would kill many Europeans.
Why is St. Petersburg so
important?
It was the First warm water port of Russia that allowed for increased trade with
western Europe and it also allowed for more cultural diffusion between east and west.

Monarch was?
Who were Huguenots?
What the vast majority of countries that we talked about practiced it was the idea that
the king or ruler had complete control over the country and the people that lived in it.
All the countries other than England which would fight a civil war about it would have
this type of rule.

Great was and why was she
important?
A ruler of Russia that would expend Russia’s borders gaining a southern warm water
port from the Ottomans and she would also work like Peter the Great to make Russia
more Westernized.

and what did they do?
Parliament of England that lasted 13 years straight they would be the parliament that
would fight against the Charles 1 for control over the country; they would help to
establish the idea of a limited monarchy.

Revolution?

William of Orange took the English throne from James II in 1688. The event
brought a permanent realignment of power within the English constitution. This
also established the idea of limited monarchy.
What were the effects of the English Bill of Rights?
Superiority of Parliament over the monarchy, parliament would be summoned regularly, and no Catholics could rule

Defeated navy by the English navy, lack of production and rising middle class, and inflation
What was a major effect of the Thirty Years’ War?
The population of Europe would decline greatly.
