1 in 5 Mental Health Awareness Week
University of Guelph, Guelph, ON
November 9th – 13th 2015
We’re back! The 1 in 5 Committee is proud to present Mental Health Awareness
Week. This is an initiative developed by students and staff on the University of Guelph
campus to promote mental wellness and open the dialogue about mental health. It is
based out of The Wellness Education Centre in collaboration with several on-campus
partners including Residence Life, Office of Intercultural Affairs (OIA), Multi-Faith
Resource Team, Student Support Network (SSN), Central Student Association (CSA), Jack.Org, Aboriginal
Resource Centre (ARC), Sustainability Office, OUTline, and Athletics. It aims to provide students with the
information and resources to sustain their mental health. All of the events are FREE and all students,
staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend.
As part of this campaign, FREE t-shirts will be distributed from Raithby Porch on November 9th and 10th
starting at 11am while supplies last. These t-shirts are to be worn on Wednesday November 11th in
support of this initiative.
A community art project will be taking place in the MacNaughton lobby on Monday November 9th from
8:30-4:30. Students will have the opportunity to paint and draw on a mural to express what being a
Gryphon means to them. The project will allow students to de-stress, be creative and learn about values
held by proud fellow Gryphons.
A Stress Management and Sleep Workshop will be hosted by Kathy Somers from the High Performance
Clinic on Monday November 9th from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in room 335 of the University Centre. The
workshop educates students about various techniques to cope with stress including relaxation
techniques, biofeedback, better sleep techniques and how to break the cycle of worry.
Yoga classes will be hosted on Tuesday November 10th from 12:00pm – 1:00pm in UC 442, as well as on
Thursday November 12th in the Athletics Centre starting at 12:30pm. This event gives students a chance
to revive their mind and body. This form of exercise increases overall wellbeing and provides an outlet
for stress, which is vital, especially during the exam period.
“Helping a Friend” Workshop will be offered on Tuesday November 10th from 5:30pm-7:30pm in
coordination with LEAD at Guelph to prepare students with the knowledge and confidence to support a
friend who is struggling with mental health. This workshop will also provide information on a variety of
on and off campus services, as well as how to practice self –care during stressful times.
“Let’s Talk Mental Health” Panel will take place on Wednesday November 11th from 5:30pm – 7:00pm in
Rozanski 103. University of Guelph students who have faced mental health challenges will share their
personal stories. A discussion will follow where all attendees can participate which will be held in
Raithby room 100.
Our week ends with Men’s and Women’s Varsity Basketball games in the main gym of the Athletics
Centre starting at 6pm. Sports not your cup of tea? Join OUTline for an alternative games night in
Raithby room 100 and challenge your friends to a wide range of board games, also beginning at 6pm!
