9th Grade Health Course Description 9th Grade Health Education focuses on building a healthy foundation for students to make responsible decisions in real life situations. Some focus will be placed on interacting in a positive healthy manner with their peers working on the skills needed to work well with other ones in peer groups. This is an in depth look at current health issues that young adults encounter as well as core health content. We will take an in depth look at the wellness and total body health, human and growth development, studying the human systems, proper nutrition, maintain a healthy body, for life, personal safety. We will work on building the skills for conflict resolution. We hope to touch all three sides of the Wellness Triangle to create a positive basis for young people to grow. The main objective is for the student to maintain quality health throughout life. Course Standards Standard 1: Health promotion and disease prevention Analyze how behavior can impact health maintenance and disease prevention. Explain the impact of personal health behaviors on the functioning of body systems. Describe how to delay onset and reduce risks of potential health problems during adulthood. Standard 2: Health information, products and services Demonstrate the ability to evaluate resources from home, school and the community Evaluate factors that influence personal selection of health products and services. Demonstrate the ability to access school and community health services for self and others. Standard 3: Reducing health risks Analyze the role of individual responsibility for enhancing health. Develop injury prevention and management strategies for personal, family, and community health. Standard 4: Influences on Health Evaluate the effect of media and other factors on personal, family and community health Evaluate the impact of technology on personal, family, and community health Standard 5: Using communication skills to promote health Demonstrate the healthy ways to express needs, wants and feelings. Demonstrate strategies for solving interpersonal conflicts without harming self or others. Demonstrate strategies used to prevent conflict. Standard 6: Setting goals for good health Predict immediate and long term impact of health decisions on the individual, family and community Formulate an effective plan for a life long health. Standard 7: Health Advocacy Express information and opinions about health issues. Major Projects and Assignments Health news Updates will be discussed every other week about new topics in the health world. Power Point Presentations: Students will develop power points on different systems of the body. Papers will be written on diseases Fitness and Nutrition project will be presented. Daily Class work- Work will be given daily and sometimes for homework. Vocabulary Quizzes and Chapter Test will be given during each chapter. Assessment Plan Grades will be based on a point system
