Ward 6 Candidates Todd J. Dennis As a member of Council for the past four years, I have been privileged to work with the Town and Gown Committee. I recognize that students are not a problem, but a source or energy and enthusiasm that helps to make this a wonderful place to live. Volunteering and advocacy are just two ways that students make a difference. I have and will continue to support students having a voice in City decisions that not only affect their well being, but ours. Our well being initiative, community energy initiative, waste diversion and green initiatives all speak to the concerns youth have about their future. We are not ignoring our city, country and planet long term well being by being short sighted. One of the most important issue affecting students is effective transit. I pledge to continue to push forward outstanding customer service and more effective transit to meet student requirements. I think if today's youth look at our record over the past four years, they'll be very enthusiastic about their future. Mark MacKinnon As an alumnus of the University of Guelph, I know how important it is to have someone on city council from Ward 6 strongly representing and advocating for issues that are important to students. I know that you want an improved transit system that meets the needs of your hectic schedule. I know that you want bylaws that respect student life and don’t come attached with extra fees that would inevitably be passed down from landlord to tenant. I know you expect and deserve regular proactive engagement from your councillor on various social media platforms. And I know you want council to vigorously and compassionately work towards ending the effects of poverty in our city. I present myself to you, running to be your Ward 6 councillor, because good governance matters to me ... and I know it matters to you too. If you have any questions about the issues of this election, please don’t hesitate to reach out via email (mark@ward6guelph.ca), Twitter (@ward6mark), or phone (519-829-5137). Whether you vote on-line starting October 7th or vote at the ballot box on October 27th, I hope I can count on your support. Thank you. Ward 6 Candidates Keith Poore I envision Guelph with a transit system that is more dynamic, adaptable, and able to pick up everyone on the route, and is able to get you to your destination on time. Having 2 central stations in this expanding city will prove to be a burden in the coming years. I also want to ensure that green spaces stay green spaces. These are great passive public spaces where everyone in the community can spend time. I also want to see a proportional voting system implemented in Guelph. You should vote for me because I am in the stage of my life where I understand students' needs much better than any other candidate in Ward 6. When issues arise in the community I want to collaborate with other council members and work on a solution that works for everyone. I think the most important issue for students will play out next year. The city will determine whether to license rental housing and the cost will be downloaded to students. My solution is not one that has been discussed at all at city council; to pro-actively educate renters on their rights instead of paying for new by-law enforcers. Glen Tolhurst -- ward 6 candidate, Information not provided Karl Wettstein My name is Karl Wettstein ,City Councillor, Ward 6 - I have been your Council Representative on our Town & Gown committee since 2006. We can all be proud of the work that Kathryn Hofer and your various CSA reps, along with Doug Godfrey and our various city departments, have played over the years. The University of Guelph is a major asset to our city. Your volunteerism as a student body, the University’s economic contribution, and the high quality of genuine mutual respect is much appreciated. Areas where we hope we can make a contribution to bettering your stay in Guelph include safe and affordable housing, an effective transit system, and welcoming communities. It goes without saying what an outstanding university like the University of Guelph means to a progressive growing city like Guelph. Your Town & Gown committee has been challenged with managing some isolated pockets of unacceptable activities. Over the past two years we have made some great strides in solving some difficult issues. I personally want thank Kathryn & the CSA, our neighbourhood groups, our local landlords and our various staff departments – by-law, police, fire, compliance for their efforts and contributions. This has been an outstanding example of teamwork.
