Since I move around a lot, it would be best to email me to let me know you are coming for a visit. Electronically: The best way to communicate with me is via email or the D2L class discussion board. Ask general questions (that others might be interested in) on the discussion board and save the personal questions for email. When I am available to respond to you: My work week is usually Monday to Friday. I usually work on this class in the mornings. I try to respond to emails within 24 hours during the work week. Please note: if you send me a message after noon on Friday, I might or might not see it until the next Monday morning. TECHNOLOGY UTILIZED BY STUDENTS: All UWF students are given a UWF email address. (name@students.uwf.edu). This is your official email address and my main means of personal communication with you. I suggest that if you use other email addresses you forward your UWF mail to that address. COURSE ISSUES: Attendance: Active class participation is expected (Taking part in on-line discussions, working on the project etc). The instructor will take note of the student’s performance and will assign an evaluation score. (I can tell when and how often you log into D2L) Weekly Quizzes Each Thursday I will post a weekly quiz at 9:00am – It will be open until the following Monday evening at 10:00pm. The weekly quizzes are open book but you should do your own work. At the end of the term we drop your lowest 1 quiz grade – for this reason there are no make-ups for missed quizzes. On-line discussions Each week I will post some online discussions – you are expected to read and respond weekly. Class projects 2 individual class projects will be required. More detail will be provided early in the class. Class Readings As with all classes, it is expected that students will keep up with the readings assigned in the text. I will post class power points to cover the main issues but you should also read the chapters in the text before you attempt the weekly quizzes. Late Assignments Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the date scheduled. Papers turned in after that time are considered LATE! Papers turned in late are penalized 10% per each 24-hour day that they are late. ACADEMIC CONDUCT Academic Conduct Expectations The University of West Florida is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and learning and to the development of ethically responsible persons. University students are expected to uphold appropriate standards of behavior and to respect the rights and privileges of others. Student conduct is expected to be lawful and in accordance with all federal, state and local laws, and university regulations Cheating on on-line Tests The weekly quizzes will be open book but…..the time will be too short to try to look everything up. The Final exam will be closed book. Do not share information with others about your quizzes – it counts as cheating as much as in a classroom. We will be using the “Respondus Lockdown Browser” to take quizzes. You should download it on your computer early in the class. If you have problems contact the computer help desk. Important: the quizzes are open book, open note… however – they are to be your work. Do not work with others on the weekly quizzes or the midterms or finals. The Final exams are not open book open note. If I catch or even suspect you - I AM REQUIRED TO TURN YOU IN FOR CHEATING. If I catch you cheating, at the very least, you WILL flunk the class! Plagiarism Policy The UWF Student Handbook, Code of Student Conduct, Academic Misconduct, states: “Plagiarism. The act of representing the ideas, words, creations or work of another as one’s own.” Plagiarism combines theft with fraud, and the penalty is correspondingly severe: failure for the assignment and, in some cases, for the entire course. At the instructor’s discretion, she/he may recommend that the student be suspended from the university. Ignorance of the rules about plagiarism is no excuse for it, and carelessness is just as bad as purposeful violation. Students who have plagiarized have cheated themselves out of the experience of being responsible members of the academic community and have cheated their classmates by pretending to contribute original ideas. For complete information regarding Academic Misconduct, refer to the UWF Student Handbook or contact Student Affairs in Building 21, 474-2384. Student Handbook: If you have any questions about the University and its policies, please refer to the student handbook at this web address: Student handbook: http://www.uwf.edu/uwfmain/stuHandbk/ ASSISTANCE: Students with special needs who require specific examination-related or other course-related accommodations should contact Barbara Fitzpatrick, Director of Disabled Student Services (DSS), dss@uwf.edu, (850) 474-2387. DSS will provide the student with a letter for the instructor that will specify any recommended accommodations. CLASS CALENDAR: Subject to change!!
