Father of main Olympian Gods. Husband and brother of Rhea. Interesting Facts: He devoured his first five children to prevent being dethroned. However his 6th son, Zeus, overthrew him. He was the youngest of the Titans. Rhea was his wife and sister. Zeus God of the sky and king of all other gods. Symbol: Oak tree, thunderbolt, eagle Family: Son of Cronus and Rhea. Brother of Poseidon and Hades. Husband and brother of Hera. Interesting facts: He overthrew his father and saved his five older siblings. He was the keeper of oaths and punished those who lied. He was the father of the famous heroes Perseus and Hercules. Poseidon God of the seas. Symbol: trident Family: Second son of Cronus and Rhea. Husband of Amphitrite, granddaughter of Titan Oceanus. Interesting Facts: The winged- horse, Pegasus, was the offspring of Poseidon and Medusa. He designed all the creatures in the sea. He has a hot temper and can be very quarrelsome. Hephaestus God of fire, volcanoes, blacksmiths, and metalworking. Symbol: fire, axe, hammer Family: Son of Hera and Zeus. Husband of Aphrodite. Interesting Facts: When he was born, his mother, Hera, was upset about his imperfections and abandoned him on Mt. Olympus. He was raised by a sea nymph named Thetis. He had a great talent for being a blacksmith. Helios God of the Sun. Symbol: His golden chariot, globe, whip Family: Son of Titan, Hyperion and Theia. Interesting Facts: Everyday at dawn, he drives his chariot of the sun across the sky until he reaches Hesperides, then he goes back to his rising place for the next day. His sisters are Selene, Goddess of the moon, and Eos, Goddess of the dawn. He let Phaetheon, his son, drive his Chariot one day, but he lost control and was struck down by Zeus. Athena Goddess of crafts, war, wisdom. Symbols: owl, olive tree, loom Family: Daughter of Zeus. Interesting Facts: She popped out of Zeus’s head. She helped Odysseus, because she admired him a lot. She never got married and was one of the virgin goddesses. Apollo God of music, healing, prophecy. Symbols: lyre, sun, mice, dolphin, laurel tree Family: Son of Zeus and Leto. Twin brother of Artemis. Interesting Facts: Plays a golden lyre, that Hermes gave to him. Was born on the island of Delos. Referred to as Phoebus Apollo, meaning “radiant” or “shining”. Hermes God of travel, thieves, and messenger god. Symbols: winged sandals, Herald’s staff, traveller’s hat Family: Son of Zeus and Maia. Interesting Facts: On the day of his birth, Hermes hid Apollo’s cattle from him. Hermes was the messenger of the gods. He guided dead souls to the underworld.
