Overview

Nose- nas/o- Exchanges air during inhaling and exhaling; warms, moisturizes,
and filters inhaled air.

Sinuses- sinus/o- Provides mucus, makes bones of the skull lighter, aids in
sound production.

Epiglottis- epiglott/o- Closes off the trachea during swallowing.

Pharynx- pharyng/o- Transports air to and from the nose to the trachea.

Larynx- laryng/o- Makes speech possible.

Trachea- trache/o- Transports air to and from the pharynx to the bronchi.

Bronchi- bronch/o, bronchi/o- Transports air from the trachea into the lungs.

Bronchioles- the smallest branches at the end of the bronchi

Lungs- pneum/o, pneumon/o- Brings oxygen into the body and removes some
water waste from the body

Alveoli- alveol/o- Air sacs that exchange gases with the pulmonary
capillary blood.
Diaphragm- A dome-shaped sheet of muscle and tendon that serves as the
main muscle of respiration and plays a vital role in the breathing process.
Pleura: Membrane space between the lungs and diaphragm

Brochiectasis> chronic dilation of bronchi or bronchioles resulting from an
earlier lung infection that was not cured

Cyanosis> blue discoloration of the skin caused by lack of adequate oxygen

Dysphonia> any voice impairment including hoarseness, weakness, or loss of
voice

Pharyngitis> inflammation of the pharynx AKA: sore throat

Pleurectomy> surgical removal of part of the pleura (membranes that
surround each lung)

Pulmonary edema> an accumulation of fluid in lung tissues

Thoractomy> a surgical incision into the wall of the chest

Tracheotomy> an emergency procedure in which an incision is made into the
trachea to gain access to the airway below a blockage

Pneumorrhagia> bleeding from the lungs

Bradypnea> an abnormally slow rate of respiration, usually 10 breaths per
minute
