3.8 Space, Surreal Collage - Communication Design Design 11 Name___________ Background You will look at the element of” space” again as it relates to design. Here we will be exploring the use of subjective space and distortion. Distortion is the departure from what is generally accepted as the normal depiction of an object. You will have a variety of communication tools to use to design and create your visuals for the purposes set out. Look at the example and consider how the realistic objects and scenes are used and combined to create what could not exist in reality; surrealism. Can you see distortions of size? What kind of feelings do these distortions create? Activity-Surreal Collage 1. Collect large images from magazines of outdoor and indoor scenes that interest you. The pictures do not have to be related. 2. Collect smaller images from magazines of objects such as animals, people, and furniture. Again, the images do not have to be related. 3. Select one outdoor or interior scene that you decide would work well as a background for your collage. You may decide to combine two or more scenes to fill your 8”x11” sheet of paper. 4. Carefully cut and glue this background onto matting. Colour of your choice. 5. Select images from Step 2 that you wish to place in the scene. To create a surreal or subjective space choose images that would not normally relate to the scene or to each other, for example, a palm tree and a snow filled landscape, small fork on a large table. 6. Try several different arrangements. When you are satisfied with your composition carefully cut out and glue your images onto the background. 7. Create a title that either attempts to explain the composition or that adds another layer of surrealism. 8. Pass you finished work and this sheet in for grading. Title Collage Consideration Name Store your cut-outs in an envelope until you are ready to glue them. Place glue near the edges of the cut-outs so that they are flat on the background, the edges should not curl up. Does your collage depict a surreal or subjective space? Is there distortion among the size of images? Questions 1. What does your title add to the collage? 2. What do you like best about your final collage? 3. What did you learn from this project?
